not sure if this is actually something that would work, but it looks like an interesting experiment to try and has the plans free for download

If those plans work, it looks liek a cheap way to start doing some long distance burning

I have seen that before and was tempted to make one. In all reality, it's really a very simplistic setup with minimal optics required. this whole setup though really depends on the quality of the optics you use. I'll check out a couple local stores around here sometime and see if I can make one, and then report back

This is a simple collimator that seems to work. I built one from similar plans located at lasercommunity.com. Click on "projects" and then see "homemade collimator". Suitable lenses can be found in old digicams or webcams. Check out the camera lenses themselves or the viewfinders in digicams.
