I want to make my first DIY and I was wondering which DIY laser is cheaper to make, Red burner or Blu-Ray? I would prefer the laser to be powered off easy to find batteries.

Thank you for your help :)

They are both about the same price, but the red burner would probably be easier. A red burner running off the DDL circuit or a rkcstr driver would need 5 AAs to run good, so those would be easy to find batteries.

What about a Blu-Ray laser? Can it run off AA batteries too?
Yeah you could, but it would be kind of impractical to use 6 or 7 AA batteries, you could use a 9 volt for a blu-ray, it wouldn't last super long, but it would be a lot smaller.

Alright I think I'll make a Red burner. Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much it'll cost?

That depends on a lot of things, if you've never worked with electronics before than you'll also have to buy a lot of basic equipment like a digital multimeter, a soldering iron, etc. Do you have any of that?

I have a soldering iron but I'm not for sure about a digital multimeter. Is the digital multimeter absoultely necessary?

Well since you're going to be using a rkcstr driver you don't need it, but if you're going to be doing a lot of projects then you'll definitely need one. They're not expensive, I got mine at Sears for 20 bucks.

Oh, and I'm about to post on your other thread.

It isn't absolutely necessary, but I strongly recommend it. It can save you from a lot of potential problems.
Here is a cheap digital Multimeter with free shipping, shipping will take a couple of weeks though: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.619~r.93098389
