CR123A housing HAS blue ray.

I had to modify it slightly as with the batteries in the switch stuck in the on position. A strong spring between the cap and the module sorted it.

I will most likely make another one soon with a few modifications.

I sort of copied Rog's bluray driver design and here is what I came up with.

Everything crammed into a 20 x 10 x 10mm driver

With a little foil to bypass the switch.


I almost screwed up when my cathode pin broke when I was removing the PCB attached to it Initially soldered a wire to the diode casing but that kept coming off so I mass soldered the wire to the aixiz housing. Ugly but works.

I have a problem. My DMM ohm meter function is screwed up and I have no idea what the resistance is on my pot and don't dare to adjust it. So basically I have no idea what current is going through my diode. Should have put in a 1ohm sense but mine was too big.

Any ideas how to estimate the resistance of the trim pot without an ohm meter. How do I know when I reach the end of the 25 turns? Will the screw pop out if I screw too much? Does it go inwards when I screw clockwise like normal screws? It doesn't seem to be moving though. I am afraid to go CCW too much either.

A quick check, when I screw clockwise, pin2 goes towards pin 3 according to the spec sheet. So screwing clockwise reduces the resistance(pin1&2 connected) and increases my current?

My voltage values running off a 7.7v weak 9v-battery
Vout= 5.03v
Vdiode=4.54v
Vpot= 0.38v
So I guess it should be alright. Now to fit that in a housing.

With a lot of pots you get a very faint click at each end, you will have to listen carefully though. If you have a spare one try it on that one first. As long as your pot is linear, not log, you should be able to get a reasonable estimate of resistance by counting the turns.

My RCR123's have arrived!! I can report that the 7805 does the business, I have a nice violet spot, all the messiness I posted about has gone.

Hey Rog,
I figured the RCR's would clean things up nicely and I am happy to know they did. I am going to continue to use these little regulators with the blu's. They are not the most efficient, but other than that they work well and are simple.

Rog - I watched the vid, and you said we have seen the case you made before...where did we see it ? LOL I cannot recall seeing that case, is it hand made ?

@Gazoo, I am very happy with this circuit used with rechargables, I would recomend it to anyone building a blue ray....Although I was interested in the Igor thread about the DC/DC converter, I shall be watching

Materials are my problem, the barrel is an old pump ram that I had knocking around, can't seem to find the same size anywhere at the moment...I think you left a zero off your price... ;D
