Some of the comments on that site are awesome. ;D

Yeah. lol. But regardless, I want to find a way to make one, or just flat out buy one.

so, how do we make one based off of parts on dealextreme.com? ;)

lol, I don't think that's possible because the bulb and reflector are really special. The WickedLasers site is down for some reason lately, so no info on pricing.

It looks impressive, but is it really -that- special?

Any decent halogen spot will be able to set paper ablaze when using a reflector that also reflects IR. Houshold halogen spots use reflectors that actually pass IR and only reflect visible light to prevent exactly this from happening.

I'm quite conviced this could be done at home with simple parts like a 20 watt halogen bulb and, for example, the reflector of a D cell maglite. If you could get a 6v lamp at 20 or perhaps 50 watts, it'd even work right off 5 or 6 of NiMH D cells, albeit not very long ;)

I'm pretty sure I saw a guide on CPF about making one of these. I think it was powered by a bunch of LiIon cells.

Yeah, the guys on Candlepower forums can show you how to make one, and a few will make them for you for ~$120-200 ( i've asked a couple a while back). Macs Customs is one of the more well known ones on there. If I remember correctly they have a bunch of batteries soldered up in series at 18 or 24 V, and you get about 10 minutes of runtime if your lucky and can ignite paper/newspaper from a couple inches away. The more I thought about it, the less I wanted it, as I wouldn't be able to afford batteries for it.

It's a bit crazy indeed... the one on CPF seems to use a 12V/100W krypton bulb, although for the setting-stuff-ablaze factor it's only the power that really matters. It's mostly IR doing the work anyways, so bulb efficiency is unimportant.

In terms of light output you might be better off going for HID, giving you more lumens per watt and thus added runtime... but less incinerating power ;)
