For example, if you could get Mac to make you another one of these somehow, I would take this any day over the "other" brand, even though it costs more, but also more lumens, 4400.

why didn't they use a bunch of rechargable lithium-ions? all you'd need a a protection circuit and a wall charger for 24v, not too hard.

I'm going to have to make some of these from DX parts, imagine a MDXL but 1.5 feet long ;D

wow, that would suck: battery life is only 15 minutes according to wicked. and knowing them, that's probably pushing it

This wouldn't be so bad if it used rechargeable Lithium ion batteries or you could plug it into the wall.

A li-ion or a lipo pack would be great, but would add at least $150.00 to the cost. But the good part would be it would have between a 30 to 45 minute run time. I would not spend $300.00 on something like this, but I think it would be fun to build. I would use a dimmer, or at least have a turbo mode button.

Oh no kiddin..lol. It would be fun to experiment with, of course goggles would be necessary and I have no idea what would be good for eye protection. Welding goggles??? I really don't know.. :-/

Exactly what benm said, all you need is a halogen bulb, and way to power it, and a way to focus it, either with a GLASS lense, or a reflector that wont melt in fire. I could throw one of these together in minutes, and it would cost about $20.

The reflector might be a bit of a pain though... a plastic one would eventually melt just from heat conducted from the bulb itself. The best bet is probably a silvered glass reflector, or one made out of (well polished) metal.

It doesnt have to be fireproof, but should be able to withstand temperatures around 200, perhaps 300 degrees C or so. You could try to silver the reflector of a simple halogen spot, making it reflect IR too...

It is a lot more involved than that and there is no way you could throw one together in minutes, and it would cost you a heck of a lot more than $20.00. Did you look at the thread on CPF? The parts are listed there.

make it out of fireproof metal, haha, seriously, you think the flame will ruin the aluminum, and the glass lens? I'm sure they had to use a glass lens because of heat anyway, so yea, fire isn't a problem for the tip of this light.
