Big regret after paying $30 for a heatsink

Well, these days i bought a heatsink a man made for me on a lathe, payed around $30, i tought i was doing a good deal...

Yesterday i was on a electronic components store and my friend saw some aluminum heatsinks, they were a little small for aixiz modules but i bought 20 to test, each one for $0,3 !!!

I have to open them a little bit but they fit perfectly! Check the pics, is it worth $0,3?

Can i heatsink a 1W module using 3 heatsinks of these?

Heat sinks work two ways.

First, they "absorb" heat. This is simply transferring the heat form the diode into the material of the heat sink. This usually requires significantly more mass than the heat source. Your little heat sinks do not qualify as "massive." ;)

Second, they transfer the absorbed heat to another medium (air, water, oil, etc.) Your little heat sinks are designed to transfer heat to the air. That's what the fins are for. In order for this process to work, you have to have sufficient surface area AND the air (or other medium) has to be constantly moving away from the heat sink in order to "remove" the heat. Are you gong to have a significant amount of air moving over the heat sink via something like a fan with some directional control?

Sorry. I am most definitely NOT the electronics guy :crackup:

Someone else will have to help with the electronics. Someone will be along soon. :beer:

You might take the time, in the mean time, to draw up a schematic of how you have all of the components wired together and write up how you are testing it

Those look like strandar heatsinks for TO-9 transtors.

With a bit of bending they could be used for laer module cooling, but that is often more work then its worth...

looks like a crappy machining job to me. maybe chuck should find a little better machine shop to make his parts. the holes arent even deburred.. just looks sloppy. also uses a screw to hold the module in.. not very good looking to me.. you can tell from the pic the HS is too big for a module. should have used a drill bit and reamer to get a better fit.

That looks like such a sloppy fit (=no thermal transfer), it can hardly even classify as a proper heatsink IMO.:(
