SO, I decided to make an effort to experiment with active cooling and these newish H series diodes. After reading that their operational temperature can be from -40c to ~60c I thought why not try and see what my output efficiency might be at -20c.

I used RHD's build for my test.
RHD used an all aluminum host and a standard Aixiz diode holder. Lens is a 405G1.

First thing I did was cool down my host for about 30 minutes to -20c.

I took a measurement of the output before moving to our cold test.

TEST 1) Host temp =22.3c
Peak - Ophir20C 2356mW, 40seconds 2146mW, 1 minute 2060mW
LaserbeeII 40sec 2114mW, 1 minute 2028mW

Test 2) Host temp =-19.6c
 Peak - Ophir20C 2778mW, 40sec 2535mW, 1 minute 2470mW
LaserbeeII 40sec 2503mW, 1minute 2435mW

WOW!!! I had no idea that cooling could yield these kinds of results.
A little shock.

The laser in question was lined up dead centre on the Ophir20C. I do not think this is an error.
I am going to test my results again to see if I get the same output. If you have one of these diodes running 1.8A-2.1A, I hope you to also try and see if you too come up with simular results. This test just showed me ~118% rise of output.

If you have a H series diode and have the ability to attempt this experiment, I seriously would love to see your results and compare them.

Not an error.

Cooling down a laser you WILL see much higher numbers.

Just be mindful of condensation...

took care of the condensation issues! That was also a concern of mine before starting.

YES, I used a freezer to get my host down to this temperature.

Hmm, nitrogen cooled ... That's stretching things a bit.
-40c is absolute minimum for these diodes.
Dry ice is -80c ...too cold.
A big doubled peltier cooling unit with a thermostat
...more like it
