I'm getting bored and need a new project. I have my blue ray diode from DDL and it is just begging me to let it shine.
blue ray.jpg

I cleaned it up as best as I could and removed the pcb material so that I will be able to mount it into a Meredith glass lens module. Gazoo and I have both found with other diodes, that the glass lens lets more light/power out!

My plan is to use this host, which uses 3 x cr123 batteries. I just ordered it from DX for only $11 bucks.

I'll just use a DDL driver with a 33 ohm resistor. It should work out pretty nice, (hopefully) if I find a nice clean way to mount the Meredith module into the flashlight.

I hope DDL is not done with the Blue Ray GBs, because I have a Kenom barrel on the way, and I don't think just one blue ray is going to be enough anyway! I'll let you know if this host works out. More to come...

Getting bored already.. ;D Well Jay, you will love the color of the diode. Keep us posted. Nice find on that DX flashlight too, it should be perfect for this project.

That does look like a good flashlight host! Please post lots of pics of it.
I've got a good project I'm working on ;D...do you wanna race? :D

Ha Ha! Well, if I only had the parts! You know how long DX takes. Plus, I'll have to machine a custom aluminum module mount... But about your project, do tell...

I do hope to have a proper Mini-Mag Mod guide ready in the next couple weeks. ;D Much thanks goes to Gazoo for his work with the AMC7135.
I'd like to get a GB for the 7135, a SMD resistor, and capacitor going...I'd maybe even make a few 'LD + driver + battery, just add your own Mini-Mag or other 2AA flashlight' for trading.

Sounds like a cool project! Just in case you didn't read about it in my MXDL 300mW thread, after a lot of 'pondering', Gazoo figured out that if using the AMC drivers, the LD must be isolated...unlike the DDL drivers, which allow a direct connect from the negative side of the batteries to the LD. Anyway, looking forward to pictures...

that's why I'm making all my current and future (and future current) circuits with pnp's instead of npn's - getting the circuits so the cases are common negative.

Here is a good source for SMD parts - they have many at 20 for 1$:
Electronic Goldmine - smd resistors
and
Electronic Goldmine - smd caps
and
Electronic Goldmine - voltage regulators
they also have smd transistors but you have to actually search with the term "smd transistor" ;-)

check 'em out...

Oh man! Better yet is this little mini MXDL for 3 X AAA:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3405
I ordered it even though it is back ordered. But check out this picture of how it comes apart!
MXDL aaa.jpg

You can tell that it will be easy to fit the driver and mount the module... just like the original MXDL from DDL's DIY thread that I have been using for the reds.

So, the plan is to use this awesome little MXDL for the blue ray with the Meredith glass lens. And power it with a DDL driver and these batteries:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.974
Now we're talking! Hope it's not back ordered too long...
Jay

P.S. Will the 3.6 batteries be too much voltage? Maybe cause too much heat to the LM317? Or, should it be fine?

It will be fine even though the batteries will be 12.8 volts total when fully charged. I am using a 7805 in a TO-92 case. The regulator is rated for 100ma's. I ran 12 volts into it and it barely got warm after a few minutes.

So much for my first blu-ray... I didn't even get it into a host yet! Lol. I was doing some testing and measuring and made the mistake of re-connecting the diode to a 'charged' silicon diode/cap. I know better than this, just got in a hurry. Lesson learned. For those of you who may be interested in the different hosts that I have shown here, I have ordered several potential hosts. All of which are very inexpensive:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5387
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.686
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5095
For sure this one will work: (using 3 X 3.6 AAA size)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3405
Because I can see from the customer photos, how it comes apart. But, I am hoping that one of the models with the button on the side, works out.
I will be starting a different thread after I get parts. Because I am going to harvest a 60+ mW diode from a Blu-ray burner...

That sucks man. I was so paranoid when I was making mine. I was being super cautious and taking my time. Now that I have successfully proven to myself that I could do it, i'm not as worried. I now have the mindset of, meh, I'll just order another sled if it dies. Well if you decide to get it and you aren't short on cash, go to Psxboy.com, they are $30, and get the express shipping. I got mine in about 4 days, was worth the $20 shipping. I always need stuff NOW!

Oh yeah, I've got 2 on the way from Psxboy. I'm going to get a couple more when DDL has another GB as well. But, as you know, my focus is really on the 60+ mW Blu-ray writer harvest!
