Re: The time has come for $250 Direct green didoes

I contacted Laser66 last week about prices. Just wingin it here, I expected to be shut down with a 4 digit price. However, at 11:08am this morning, I received a very wonderful email from Will:

"Sean:

We are primarily shipping the <515nm devices. There have been production delays, but we are expecting to restock next week. The above devices are $250 with a value added feature added for sale: lens/ housing, and / or driver.
With production yields increasing, with higher wavelengths dominating, there is a shift towards higher wavelength devices. Prior to this, the > 515nm devices were nearly 5X the cost of the other parts. This is obviously changing for the better with lower costs for the highly desirable wavelengths.

I'd like to discuss your situation over the phone, so we understand your needs. Can you include your telephone number?

Will Roberts, Owner"

We discussed things further, and after exchanging a few emails, I found out he is apparently getting a shipment next week of these <515nm diodes, and they will in fact be for sale for $250 Now that price is no big deal for those avid wavelength hunters. As it is we pay 2-4 times that for high end 473 and 589/593, and for some "50mW single mode diode that will make nice beams" that is AMAZING. So, get your PMs and emails sent (sorry Will :na:) Also, I was given full permission to post this (I figured it might cause some issues if prices weren't final or something) but he did give permission to post this. So good luck with your 50mW direct green builds folks! I can't wait to start mine in a few months :)
What is a green "didoe"?
Is this what Mrs. Frankenstein uses when Frankie is out of town and she's feeling lonely?

On the serious side, I couldn't help myself, you need to get the performance specs, especially the divergence angle and beam shape. Typically these direct inject diodes are designed for use in projectors where the more divergence the better.

If this is case and I'm almost certain it is, then I don't see much of a market for individual 50mw diodes for $250. Even if ordering 100, I bet the price is still over $150 each. I just don't see lots of people who are so hungry for a 515nm 50mw that will cost the hobbyist close to $200 by the time a host, driver and lens are taken into account and that's if the divergence and beam shape are good.

I'm still interested to find out the specs on these and what reduction in price can be had for quantity.

Yeah, I'd be pretty damn interested in a group buy too... Do want!

I'm down for a GB! I'll contact him about multiple pricing and pos back soon!

Well, I sent a request, my part is done, waiting for a reply. Second, I can't see anyone who is willing to spend $500+ on yellow and blue lasers known for being unstable, and a bit bit wishy washy, not being ok with spending <$400 on a <515nm build outputting 50mW with a "nice beam" and single mode. I mean, we paid $220+ for 12X diodes right? Is an extra $30 for a killer awesome wavelength with no catches but maybe bad divergence and it being 3.8mm really that extreme when these used to be EASILY $1250+? I honesty am missing the point you're trying to make here.

Also, a request has been sent to RHD requesting spec sheet info, his review of his 510nm build shows possible clues to him having a spec sheet, or a more thorough grasp on these diodes, and may be able to shed some light on these little gems.

Wait, did I miss something? He got those diodes from CNI?

Oh my I need to edit that, I was reading two threads at once when I made that comment, please pardon the mistake :yabbem:

Those look very interesting but I am too new to the scene to be laying that kind of cash for those guys...
I should be done with my first build in 2 weeks :)

If the price is right, count me in for one.

Would be great to get different price quotes from different companies and people to pick out the best one for the GB.

I don't believe a GB discount is necessary for a $1200+ diode being sold to us for $250.

Re: The time has come for $250 Direct green didoes

It's not a $1,200 diode any more...

There's no way in hell he would sell them at that low of a cost if they were honestly that much in price.

If I remember right when I had emailed him a while ago I think the cost for a decent quantity per diode (50-100 of them?) was $50-$70? Which is pretty damn good. I'll have to check back in my emails again... so don't quote me on that price just yet!

He hasn't responded to any of mine as of late so I don't know if he's ignoring me, or what the dealio is.

Well, RHD has said that all the sources he's gone too have said $1200+, and that that's the cheapest he's ever seen. This wasn't said too long ago if I remember correctly. No responses to me either, but he is also running a business, and that can be hectic sometimes, plus he has a life too. Still though, I feel no need for group discount prices, I mean if we get them, that's awesome, but as it is, $250 is awesome.

From $1200 to $250 is a very large DROP in price but if it isn't available then they are still vaporware. I wonder why the seller won't shine more information about the diodes ?

Yeah, it seems slightly sketchy to me. It seems to stress a lot about how they're not vaporware... yet so far they seem to be.

Well Laser66 is a respected member of the forums, and a respected merchant of laser goods, so I have no reason to doubt him. It'd be if Cajunlasers started selling them. However laser66 sells more complicated, and complex devices. They also have 445 diodes for $50 each. I have no reason to doubt him and his claims.

Dont tell rhd he might go on a blind laser fueled fury when he finds how cheap direct green diodes have gotten

matt, rhd's green diodes weren't significantly more expensive than these are now :p
