That side menu that follows you down is REALLY stupid. Jack, remove it instantly.

I have a fairly decent sized monitor, and I can't even see the checkout/shopping cart on the bottom of the menu, because the menu moves down when I try to scroll down to see it. I had to disable JavaScript to stop it scrolling, and disabling JavaScript pretty much screws up every other site, so that's no good.

The JS menu doesn't bother me that much.

The thing with web development is that you should always make things to be as compatible with as many peoples systems as possible.

My monitor is 800 pixels high, and I can't see the bottom of that menu. If you tried that in Web Dev class at Uni, you'd fail horribly. Web sites should be compatible with 800x600 monitors at the minimum.

Well, that looks more 'unfinished' than anything, I'd say backgrounds are going to be put in there when it's finished :)

But the JS menu looks pretty final... and that's bad, it's a Web Development disaster.

Even if it still has some problems, it is much better than the old site. Now that it looks more professional more people will feel safe buying a laser from Opto.

Ah, the JS menu is gone :) Maybe he read my rantings here ;D

There, it looks really nice now. We should probably hold off commenting too much on it until it is done :)

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but what does this new laser law enforcement policy mean for companies like optotronics and their overseas suppliers? Will optotronics still be able to get lasers in the coming weeks/months? I hope the website update is an indicator of good news, at least for now.

I think HumanSymphony's statement still stands. Even for laptops that's on the low-end.

Regardless, that site is tacky. I hate the bevels on the sub-menus; they look like amateurish crap from the mid-nineties.

The law of the land when it comes to web design is not accesibility for everyone, it's accessibility for your target audiences. I know when I design sites, there is a general target computer demographic: 1024x768 display minimum, IE 6+, Gecko engine browsers (Firefox, Mozilla, etc.), Apple Safari, Javascript, Flash 8 player. People using systems below those kinds of specs are usually lacking money or are just kind of weird (like idiots who whine that Vista doesn't run on their pre-2000 hardware)--usually never-to-be-customers. I won't even bother with Netscape 4.x users; they're unworthy of catering to, and clients will end up paying more for the hours or work needed to get the site to work with NS 4.x than they'd ever earn from such users.

For a laser site like that, the target demographic are people with enough money to burn that they can buy a costly laser. Generally this means they've already spent a good amount on a decent computer, with a decent monitor to boot. Folks on laptops with small screens... well... you can scroll, because you're in the minority for viewing this site.

Still, this site could use some work to just make it more usable and attractive in general, and in doing so, probably manage to cater to those small-laptop-screen users at the same time.

Novalasers will be upgrading their site sometime soon. Hopefully it turns out better than this one did.

Nowa days 1024x768 is more coming on the minimum.

But I'd still leave that for computer related sites. When your target audience is computer people, you can get away with strict requirements. But this is lasers, not computer related. Making the site compatible at 800x600 really doesn't take all that effort, and with some clever designs it won't matter.

I guess it just really depends on how you want to do things, since all this stuff is subjective.

OEM Laser Systems, Inc. website is 1000 pixels wide to accommodate everything but 800x600. Of all the visitors only 2.95% use that resolution. Everybody else meets our minimums.

Well the site does look last century..but the lasers matter more tho, not how it looks. I rather like the design because it's techie.
