Hi, new poster. :)

After researching many possible sites, I settled on this 50mW Greeny from O-Like:

Pocket compact Green laser 50mW [OLPG50] - $28.00 : Welcome to O-Like.com, Your source for laser products

What can I expect from this? They say you get what you pay for, so I would expect no IR filter, and no glasses. But as for the performance of the laser itself, I won't be getting a 5mW right? How long on average does it take to arrive at someones house in the US?

My experience with lasers is 5mW and under, I want to step it up a little bit. :D

it shouldnt be too bad, 40mW or more at a guess. my shipping time experience with o-like may be different to yours, ignoring that im in a different country, because i got the 500mW model, which i think they used air-mail for. it got from china to germany in 8 hours anyway. regardless of the 2-3 time it took to get through dhl, it took 8 days to process before they sent it out
then again, that could just be because its harder to disguise a 500mW laser than a pen-style one lol. i've heard most people can expect o-like orders to come within 10 days.

dont run it for more than ~1 minute at a time and it should be ok, though inevitably i doubt theres gonna be a great heatsink in it or anything.

It's a very good first real laser! If you have only seen <5mW's before, this one will blow you away :)

I just got this one and I am really happy with it. I think its the same module, just a different host. I am in TX and it took about 10 business days, 3 to process the order and about 7 to make it here once it was accepted by Hong Kong Post.

I bought this about 6-8 months ago, it's not that bad, but in my opinion it wasn't good enough for me so I sold it to a friend for a fraction of the price.

pro's:

pops balloons

very bright

very close to 50mW if not 50mW possibly a tiny bit overspec

mainly to do with the host, if the lens gets dirty some how it's all over, you cant do anything, you'll have a messed up laser in your posesion.

Overall advise:

Make sure you keep this laser clean, and treat it care, don't put it in your pocket, worse thing is to drop it on concrete, and even worse dont ever throw in dirt or leave in an unclean envirement.

If you follow that your new laser should, I'm sure you'll enjoy it to the max.

I would respectfully disagree, there is ALWAYS a way to disassemble the laser without damaging it, after all they have assembled it somehow!

Simply asking Susie for instructions would suffice if there are no visible means of getting access to the lens.

Dude, at some point the laser was assembled from pieces, so there is always a way of disassembling it,
I suspect that the heatsink+module assembly was simply pressfited into the main tube, and removing it would be difficult. But ceirtanly not impossible.

If you've tried canned air duster spray, and a micro lenspen won't fit in there, one good trick to cleaning an otherwise inaccessible laser aperture lens is to use laboratory or even coffee machine filter paper.

Just fold/roll it to a sharp triangular point and push it in there and spin it around. Make sure your hands are washed very clean before you do this, or dirt & oil from your fingers will get on the paper and leave you no better off than before.

Granted, if there's grit or something able to scratch the lens this will just push it around, but if it's the usual dust and pocket lint that gets into the aperture, this will clean it out nicely.

The reason being that filter paper is very pure and clean, it has no additives or chemicals, and is a very lint and dust-free formulation to keep it from contaminating what is being filtered, either a chemistry experiment, or your coffee. It's similar in formulation to lens cleaning paper for that reason, but is something you're likely to have in your kitchen.

I have one of these coming in the mail. It'll be my first laser build. Just wondering if anyone can give any guidance on putting one of these into a host and adding an ir filter?
