I think you are right, bullet style sighting lasers have been around for years. Never used one myself but I have been aware of them.

Yea, they are for "sighting in" a rifle. They are made to fit in the chamber and shoot a laser down the barrel so that you can see the spot in your scope.

If anyone intends to buy them for this purpose however, you should reconsider. These are rarely precise enough to even get the laser out of the barrel, let alone downrange to a target. Even if the beam were perfectly aligned with the barrel, a rifle doesn't necessarily put a bullet right where the barrel is pointed, there is a lot more to it then that. They are basically a gimmick to get you to buy a cheap laser for more than it is worth.
High quality ones do exist, but they stick in the end of your barrel, not in the chamber. They are also only useful for initially mounting a scope, just to get it "close enough" so that you can hit paper and sight it in correctly.

On a side note; Don't buy rail mounted lasers for rifles (like the one in the pic above) either. Whether you are military, a hunter or a paintballer, you will regret having a highly visible laser beam pointing out your position to every living thing in sight. They won't magically make your shooting better either.
Small lasers for pistols are great, they are actually useful when you are 5 feet from your target and speed is a priority. Rifles require a real scope or sights.
