Huge cni frustrations part 2:

I'll preface this by saying that Aryntha had the initial suspicion here, I merely confirmed it, once my spectrometer arrived -

Long story short, the "556nm" portable handhelds that we debuted here:

Aren't 556nm. They're 561nm.

I have given CNI a few weeks to reply to my inquiry, requesting clarification, but they haven't responded.

Now oddly, I don't actually care about the wavelength being 561nm. For me, this is still a completely unique wavelength in my collection, that I love. But I am angry that they would blatantly lie about what they were selling, and then refuse to even respond to emails about the issue. It feels to me like they think the hobby laser community are a bunch of patsies to be "milked" for their cash, without owing us any duty of honesty in return.

I'm glad Aryntha tipped me off to the potential for our units being 561 instead of 556 ahead of time. If he hadn't, I probably would have used my unit to calibrate my spectrometer, and then a lifetime worth of spectrometer readings would have been wrong.

Again, the kicker here is that I'm still completely pleased with everything I've received by CNI in terms of the quality of their product. I've ordered a 30mW 473 that arrived as a 70mW, two 589s rated for 30mW that arrived as 80 and 90mW. And then this, which although the wrong wavelength, is a true gem of a unique unit. But the lies have spoiled all of the goodwill that their awesome product had created.

Yeah, like you said though. That unit has such a flawless dot. I love that picture of it in the thread.

You should probably ask him. I suspect that his two portables are identical.

Not having a 556nm control renders that comparison pointless.

But, yeah... this definitely is another hit against CNI's credibility.

Well this is certainly yet another in a series of cni missteps. :undecided:

Replace "Chinese", with just about any other nationality and the description still fits.

What's sad is, while in the media china is being portrayed as becoming more westernized, the reality is western developed nations are starting to become more like china. The US government spy apparatus, for both domestic and international concerns is second to none... especially since 9/11 we have seen a rather dramatic and systematic erosion of constitutional rights.

Wow. This is something I would be extraordinarily frustrated by... I would go as far to demand a refund, even though it would be futile. Especially because you probably paid more for it than it would otherwise have cost you.

That's just it, I'm willing to bet 100% that if after rhd and Aryntha placed the orders, CNI came back and said... "Guys sorry, but the best we can do is 561nm, do you want us to refund you or proceed" both of them would have said make the lasers.

Except that's now the approach CNI took, and where the frustrations are coming from.

I would have said go ahead.

Aryntha may / may not have, I don't know. But what I do know, is that if I was him (IE, already with a 561 in hand) I would have cancelled the order.

My position has been:
I didn't have a 561nm, so a 561nm was equally cool (to me) as a 556nm. It doesn't matter to me that 561s were already out there, this a new wavelength to me. But I feel bad for Aryntha, because he ended up with a duplicate, instead of something unique to his collection.

I'm still frustrated that they wouldn't have told the truth up front, and equally frustrated that post-sale they have explained the issue away as being temperature based.

That said, I'm pretty sure from the chat I had with CNI that they would have offered me some sort of exchange/partial refund. I didn't pursue that line of conversation, because I decided I was happy with the 561 either way. So we can't completely fault them for their after-sale treatment. I think they were prepared to do *something* to remedy it.

Laserglow and dragonlasers at best. CNI also has a US branch that only sells <5mW rated lasers, handylaser if I recall. If any of the three I would deal with laserglow. Haven't seen a bad review without them refunding/replacing the laser.
