Can I combine 2 lasers to boost power?

Is it possible to combine two cheap lasers into one set of optics to boost power?

I'm thinking about canibalizing two DX 200mw lasers pointers, mounting them both in the same shell and angling them so they both point into the input lens of a beam expander. Will they combine into one beam or will they come out as two beams. What is the proper way to combine laser beams if there is one? :-?

Well, they will come out as two beams, there's no way to combine the two beams perfectly into one.

However, you can shoot both lasers and create a point of intersection.

At this point you've essentially created a point of 400mW laser powah.

It is very possible to combine the two beams into one. You have to use expensive optics like mirrors, dichros, beamsplitters, and prisms. I know you can combine lasers of two colors into one beam using just one dichro but I don't remember how to combine the beams of two lasers of the same color. People here have done it though. Not handheld though. That would be very hard to do.

It's not that hard really. You really just need a cube and use polarization to combine them. The problem is that it's hard to align, and you'll probably never going to have a perfect beam. They'll still split up after some distance...how much distance depends on how well you align them.Plus you're gonna have some power loss so 200+200<400 :p But it's possible, andy_con did it with 2 red lasers(I think the thread was called "600mW red")

But if you want power , and like aligning stuff so much , maybe it's better to get a massive 808nm diode and a huge set of crystals and get working on that ;)

No, I'm pretty sure a dichro is for combining beams of different colors. I mean even the name says it: di-chro as in two colors. :-/

A dichro can serve many functions, combining colours being one of them, which is not very different from combining two laser beams.

dichros work by passing one wavelength and reflecting another, so you can pass say red - then bounce green off the other side to create an orange beam - if you use two of the same wavelength they will both either pass or be reflected - you want a PBS cube.

Yes contact the Public Broadcasting Service and ask them for a "cube". Tell them entity sent you ;)
