I got some optics things from Edmund awhile back (before I was into lasers, just into cameras back then). I think the white edged stuff is some cheap diffraction grating, as I got the same thing, and it diffracts, but it's not as good as some others I've seen. As for the optics in the bag, mine were fantastic. Some were chipped, no big deal though, some things that were in there, I still don't know what they are, or what they do, they're black rectangles that look to be made of glass. Edmund Scientifics also has a laser pointer kit, I got it for Christmas. It's turned out to be pretty handy. The diffraction grating and the color filters are amazing, the lenses are pretty good too, I don't like the rubber caps that the lenses are supposed to do into because they don't fit any lasers I have, and they don't seem like they'd hold the lenses well.

Sorry for the temporary thread jack. Just to get back on topic, the optics grab bag is a pretty good deal, and it's kinda nice to see what random things you get in the end.

Hi NOOB,
I guess for $10 and free shipping it's not that bad a deal.
They are pretty beat up though, I can only imagine what the ones you didn't keep looked like.

Until now, I've been inspecting and throwing away any lenses or prisms with chips or scratches as I'll no longer put damaged optics in my kits. I think from now on, I'll just set the damaged stuff to the side and sell it off as grab bag material.

Thanks for putting up the pictures.

Hi falchionsmight,
I followed your link and it's showing a "Laser pointer experiment kit".
They say a pointer is not included. For their $50 price you should get more than a little booklet, a few lenses, one prism and some coloered filters; they are really ripping people off.

Our optics kit does not include the pointer (unless added), but for $66 it includes at least 35 pieces (usually more). All optical glass high quality lenses and prisms with no nicks or scratches.

They include:
1- Optcal component storage case.
3- front surface mirrors
7-8 prisms
8-10 optical glass lenses
1- beam splitting filter
4- diffraction gratings
1- polarizing filter
1- neutral density filter
6- colored filters (red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow)
1- 12 inch roll of double sided tape for mounting components.
1- 4 inch section of reusable putty for mounting components.
3- extra bonus items; may contain any of the following (glass or acrylic lens, prism, eyepiece, filter)

Now this is a deal for $66 optics kit with new, non-defective optics that can't be beat!
This kit does not include an experiment booklet yet, but there is one in the works.

Moderators:
Hopefully this wasn't taken a blatant plug for our optics kit, I just wanted to make sure no one gets taken for $50 on what can't be more than $6.00 worth of stuff when they can get a huge kit with tons of possibilities for $16 more.

Thanks
Jack

For $10, it is a deal that is worth it in fact. But the Edmund kit for $50 is too much. I think you could probably buy these optics from eBay or get them each individually and make that kit for cheaper. But, without knowing Optotronics, I think Edmund makes for a reliable and solid purchase from a reputable company in the field. I'd always rather pay a little extra and get something from a seller I can trust than to get something from eBay and end up scammed. ;)

Bootleg2go, It sounds like your kit is a way better deal. To be honest, I just got that kit as a Christmas present, and didn't know what the price of it was. I thought the kit was pretty cool, but you're right, it is overpriced. Where can I get your kit bootleg2go? It sounds like a really sweet deal. Sorry about recommending something that was overpriced.... but it's difficult to define how good something is when I didn't pay for it, and only get to use the stuff in the kit. Also, Edmund's experiment book blows, the experiments in it are boring, at least in my opinion.

That's kind of a bummer, I guess I won't tell my Aunt she got ripped off :(

Bootleg2go, I'm not sure if this helps any, but I think it'd be really cool to see a laser pointer experiment kit that has some fiber optic cable in it. That stuff would really make kids pay a bit more attention when they're learning about light in a physics class (and I personally would find it a great addition to your kit)

In hopes of returning this thread to it's original topic, I'll post some pictures of my optics bag I got (I also got it for Christmas), I also got a bag of lenses too. Haven't really used them, like I said before, I got the otpics stuff hoping I'd make some camera lenses from them, now with my lasers I might be able to make a decent multi-lens system :D

Hi Daedal,
To clear up some confusion, none of the optics from the scientificsonline website are made by the highly respectable Edmund Optics company.
These kits offered on the scientificsonline website have nothing to do with Edmund Optics except for the fact that in 2001 scientificsonline bought the "Edmund scientifics" name from Edmund Optics.

If you read the scientificsonline about us page, you will think they are real as they talk of all the good Edmund optics company accomplishments, but nothing about scientificsonline...they want you to think they are the real Edmund.

If you go the edmund optics company timeline, you will see they sold out to scienticsonline in 2001.

Haha... that's pretty funny! I can't believe they're actually getting away with that... ;D

Oh, by the way, I was only saying that it's a good idea to buy from a reputable place like Edmund in regards to the kit falchionsmight got.
