I figured I'd jump in front of the train and be the guinea pig for another run-of-the-mill cheap chinese gadget site. A few months back I took the plunge on a (then) $126 "power certified 300mW" 532nm green laser from DinoDirect. I didn't expect much, and was blown away when the laser beat it's advertised spec. The same seems to have proven true for subsequent purchases in that particular line of DD lasers.

Today I stumbled upon a similar scheme called "true power guaranteed" from a site called aHappyDeal dot-com. I've never ordered from them before, nor am I aware of any laser-related feedback about their items here on the forum. Like DinoDirect, not all of the lasers on aHappyDeal.com are power guaranteed. It appears to be a specific designation given to some of their lasers. Of course I'm sceptical, and go into this without any expectations. But at the very least, they seem to be aware of the need to measure output power, and are conscious of the fact that laser enthusiasts may purchase their lasers and meter them. From their product listing page:

"The range of our laser pointers'power of the True Power Guaranteed series on our website is the true laser power tested by a professional tester, the range of this series's products power error is strictly controlled within 10%, laser enthusiasts can trustingly buy our this series's products. The following are the power tested scenes of a 200mw green laser pointer and a 500mw green laser flashlight."

It doesn't say anything about IR, so the first alert flag goes up.

My position is as follows:
- If the 532nm measures within 10% +/- of the claimed power, I'll consider the sale and their listing to be a legitimate success.
- If the 532nm + IR measures within 10% +/- of the claimed power, I'll consider the sale to be a failure, but I'll keep the laser and move on with life.
- If the 532nm + IR does not measure within 10% +/- of the claimed power, I'll seek an exchange or refund, and document the process here.

The Purchase:
* I've intentionally broken their URL, just in case they regularly google their own product URLs. This isn't foolproof of course, but I wanted to try and avoid them stumbling across this post, and then treating my order any differently.

"True Power Guaranteed 200mW 532nm"
- Typical host, we've all seen it before. Takes 1x 16340, included. Side clicky (my fav) host.

http://www.ahappydeal-dot-com/products/product_32316.htm
"True Power Guaranteed 200mW 532nm"
- Silver pen-styled hold. Takes 2x AAA. I'm left seriously questioning whether 2x AAA can provide the current required to produce 200mW of resulting 532, but we shall see.

Huge note: Shipping is not free with these guys. For the two lasers, shipped via EMS to Canada, it was $28. That's on top of the purchase price. They had a cheaper shipping option for $21, and one for $24. Total bill for the two lasers, all said and done, was $160. Basically $80 each. It's funny, my first reaction to the shipping charge was annoyance. "Argh, way to tack fees on at the end". However, in fairness, they never give you the impression that there won't be shipping fees, and were it not a cheap chinese gadget site, you'd expect to pay for shipping in any other situation.

Here's where I'll track the chronology:
May 23 - Order placed.

Well I wish you the best of luck on the results, hopefully they didn't just take that power guaranteed thing from Dino or something and aren't really measuring them.

+1 for taking one for the team :)

I will be very surprised if that pen can put out anywhere near 200mW pure green.

The other one looks promising though.

Good luck:beer:

Only time will tell. Though as mentioned, I'm sceptical too.

its nice that they go into detail about the lasers being within 10% or rated output etc. Hopefully they wont be 200mW with 150mW IR.

Seems to be a very promising lead on a new budget supplier though.

Lasers arrived on the , or at least "sort of did". DHL made a delivery attempt then, and then failed to re-attempt delivery for over 10 days. I had a huge ongoing complaint with DHL, and it was a nightmare getting information from them. But this isn't aHappyDeal.com's fault.

So for all intents and purposes, this arrived on June 2nd.

The silver laser meters dead on spec! (actually, 199mW peak). I didn't know this ahead of time, but the IR glasses I own are also 532 blocking, so I couldn't test the IR on these after all.

Unfortunately, the black laser metered only at 150mW. As per the approach I mentioned earlier in this thread, I'm going to contact them for an exchange or refund on the black laser, and document the process here.

I'll provide a better review of the silver laser here shortly. But my first impression - it's awesome, beautiful, works great so far - very happy.

Pretty nice results... Really wish you had an IR filter.

How stable are these? Are the 199mW and 150mW strictly peak? What is the average output?

Also I'd be happy to take the silver pen off your hands;)

Very awesome with that silver pointer. Any plans on switching the tail half of it with a black end? If you don't have one I have an extra in pretty much new shape.

It's exactly like the end on this

Nope - it actually unscrews at the tail. I've had a few NewWish style pointers in my day, and this is a much different look (other than the obvious - color). It's a more "precise" or "machined" look. It's a new host plain and simple. This weekend I'll do a mini review with some photos. But I'm quite happy.

Oh, haha I searched the site and brought up the wrong one. That is a neat looking host now that I see the correct one.

Anyone know where I can get a quick IR filter? (not china, and hopefully not too pricey shipped)

Ahhhh, but the silver is my new favourite green ;)

I noticed you also like shiny silver;)

You can order one from radiant, although they are pretty small so installing them is kind of a pain in the @$$.

Strictly to measure IR output I use cheap goggles, just easier that way.

Edit: I'm thinking of ordering one of these, but my luck with chinese sites is always terrible.

Double Edit: If this pen follows form, I would expect it to be 30% IR, +/-10%, but even so, that's a ton of power in a very small host. I'm far more curious about stability.

Edit: It's too bad Canada post is down right now, or I'd send it to you. Not sure how much it would cost to FedEx/UPS it.

This is my favorite IR filter I have, I almost want to wear it as jewelery because I'm such a dork.

12x1.5mm :)

My 9x2mm filter is stuffed inside my firedragon atm.

They have the largest power guaranteed line I've ever seen on a laser site. Blows DinoDirect's selection out of the water with both selection and pricing.

I might take a shot on a 100mW guaranteed pen laser powered by 2x AAA, since yours was legit.

After shipping the cost for a 100mW pen is 31.44. That was just around my maximum budget for a new laser.

I wonder if anyone on here lives close enough to me that has an LPM I could use to continue to test this site's legitimacy.
