As inspired by the RB Astro " Gensis Project " and the suggestion from the Alaskan.....

See...http://laserpointerforums.com/f44/g...-white-rainbow-proof-concept-build-99140.html

YES...YES Chris....This can be done !!! and... " Terrawatt Labs " (TWL) has the design/solution on hand !!
OK....TWL proposes a back-to -back , up-down concept !

The footprint of the RGB module is 44mm long x 39mm wide.
Module "A" output = Beam "A", Module "B" output = Beam "B"

Mount Module "A" on a 39mm x 100mm x 5.6mm Aluminum Base plate
This Base plate will also have Module"B" mounted to it....on the opposite side.....so...it is common to BOTH modules.

Mount a bounce mirror in front of Module "A". Mount the mirror so that Beam "A" is directed down, toward the Base plate.
Machine a bore hole into the Base plate to allow Beam "A" to pass thru and head toward the other side ... toward Module "B"

Mount Module "B" to the opposite side of the Base plate. Mount a PBS cube in front of Module "B"

OK...Now....Beam "A" will enter the PBS cube from the bottom....and Beam "B" will enter the PBS cube from the side.
The beams will combine to deliver the " Beam-On-Beam " alignment ...AKA.." BOB" hahahahaha !

We should now have 800mW of blazing White....in a most compact package !!!
This White Coherent " Double Decker" WILL be built...I assure you. Well...very, very LIKELY !! I bet the Alaskan is thinking about this now !!
I will build one...the optics on this are very easy !! ...and the beauty of the Single Mode LD is perfect !!!

Just sent your regards to the TWL - Professor Puffindart for this inspired design !!

CDBEAM

Note: We MAY need a Waveplate filter to rotate the polarization on one of the beams before it enters the PBS...not sure ??...But....I do not think so with the way the Beam "A" is being bounced.

Note: BTY...A big thanx to Matuz/OPT Laser for offering this little RGB beauty. Great Design !!!

Hi guys,

Your idea of PBSing single mode RGBs is very interesting! Yes, with single modes you do not need waveplates - the beam should stay round no matter how many times it was bounced from mirrors. One will also save on beam expansion and can use 10x Jetlasers BE at the end.

Also. For more power one can add 405nm single mode as 4th LD to each of the modules - this will not change colour shade of resulting beam but more than double the power all beam staying single mode.
I know Thorlabs sells 425nm cutoff dichros (unfortunately they are round), but maybe other companies, too.

Yikes....I am not that ambitious as to add a 4th LD !!!! Too much modification...Adding more Power...yes....but the complication of adding a 4th LD....Naaaa....The Opt RGB looks very good as it stands.

Now...Multi or single mode LD BOTH have a Polarized Electromagnetic Field orientation...so...we must be concerned with that. To accomplish combination...the PBS demands one beam Polarization enter at a perpendicular to the cube central axis...and the other beam Polarization enter at a parallel to the cube central axis.

I am relatively certain....that with the beam mirror set up....this " Perpendicular/Parallel" condition is going to be delivered to the PBS....so...we will get the beams combined.

Adding a Beam Expander....Naaaaa. I tell you...the addition of a BE is a really demanding alignment job....again....this build will be complicated enough !! Yes....a BE would lower the divergence....but these Single Mode beams are nice and tight///right outta the box !!!

Ain't Optics a Bitch !!! They are for me !!!:crackup::crackup:

Oh, yes, you are right!

In your design (baseplate squeezed between 2 modules) the beam B will apparently enter the PBS rotated 180° compared to beam A, so you would need a waveplate to make polarization difference 90°.

Or you could rotate LDs in the module B by 90° but this probably does not make sence (pressing out-pressing in).

RB Astro, did you manage to get 2 RGB modules or only one? They are out of stock now.

Sorry for bothering (CDBEAM sure have considered this) but you have to be sure that in both modules all LDs are pressed at same orientation and in theory the manufacturer did not have to esure this for good RGB functioning if the modules were not supposed to be PBSed...

I bet they can be ordered with what ever orientation you want. Asked Robert if he could do this project for me over a month ago, been on the back burner on it as he finishes the cyann cannon first. I have been wanting one of these, in some form, for two years now but until I saw these modules a couple of months ago, didn't ask if CDBEAM would make one for me. Did someone manuever into the next available build spot, please tell me no. Maybe this one is for you?

No this one is not for me. I think it is for RB Astro or for you (if you can get 2nd module:).

Next 6 months I think I will be busy trying to make Brightest blue single beam (from 4 multimodes) and squeeze it into a pointer as you asked...

But the idea of making Super strong single mode is not bad either. Maybe one day I want to try combining 405, 450, 520, 638 and 650 and then PBS 2 of such RRGBV modules. Or PBS first and then combine because 425nm (seen at Thorlabs) and 642nm (from LIVE lasersystems) cutoff dichros are still rare and expensive.

What I really wanted to do was four of those modules but we settled on two using PBS. IDK, maybe someone else was also interested in doing one too. Easier to machine for two units and build them together than just one-off's, that is what us happening, I bet. I bet if others wanted the same thing we could get more built concurrently and all have a piece of white lightning pie :)

LOL, how did you know?
Yes I bought the second one as well, two weeks later. :shhh:
The first one just blew me away when I saw it light up.
It's for another project though, I won't be combining the two modules.

OK...I have done a thought experiment....and I am sure a Waveplate will not be necessary.

This is one of those ultra rare situations...in which...the Vertical Bounce rotates the beams of Module "A"....in just the orientation we need them. WOW !!!

No...Chris...you are first in line for a " White Lightning "....and I plan on building two (2) concurrently !!...Why build one....when you can build two !!!!!

AND....I plan on being very fortunate that RB is blazing the trail with the " Genisis " build....especially on the Electronics !!!!....I am really challenged in the arena of Electronics !!

"Let's see....duh...Red goes to da Red....and Black goes to da Black...I think ??? "...That bad !!!....Almost !!!

I can handle the Photons ( Kinda)....but ...not the Electrons !! I need a real " Paint by Number " Primer on all things.......

" Eeeelectronic "

OK, I thought maybe someone had asked to build one too, I know you like to build things in multiples instead of one-off's, better efficiency for the money. I don't think you do this for profit, instead to have a source for parts to be able to do the experiments you want to do, then let your creations fly to the guy who funded it, sadly, I bet. Wish we could coaxially combine more than two of those units! But two is still a whole heck of a lot of power for single mode, their divergence is so low I bet at 700mw of power from combining two units (or more) will make a brighter spot a thousand feet away than a multimode laser ten times that amount of power can, for a given collimation lens diameter.

I can do the electronics, I have worked as an electronics tech/engineer my entire career of 40+ years.

Great....I will be watching the Genesis project closely. MAny issues to be solved....for that and the White Lightning concept !!

The RGB modules are small....but....with the WL project....they are x 2 !!....and add on to the front for the combination optics !!

And then there are the drivers....also x 2 for extra size !!

I like the 10K slider controls....but...I question their size ?? Ergonomically...the slide controls are likely the best....but for size...hmmmm...???
Very small pots may be better as far as size go ???? I assume one set of sliders/pots will be common to BOTH drivers.

In the end...what host is choosen....and what additional mount fixtures are required...is a function of the diameter of the dual module sandwich, the room required for the drivers and the slider/pot controls ...and the LiPo cells to supply the Opt Laser drivers !!!

These units MUST be built....then....the host can be located !!!....and also....we need a LiPo battery configuration of 12 VDC....six (6) 18650 ???...3 + 3 units ???? each group of three (3) supplying one driver ???

Yikes...What host uses six (6) 18650 cells ??????????????? ANY ????

Perhaps a 3D Cell Maglight....loaded with three (3) 26650 cells....will also give us a good amount of current @ 12.6 VDC !!

Dunno....This will also be a choice for RB...for he needs 12 VDC also !!!!

We MAY go outta the box here....and take a lesson from the " Purple pHaze "
Build....in which an RC battery pac was used.....

MANY issues in this area !!! Any suggestions MOST welcome !!!

These builds will start early 2017.....and will be a S L O W process !!

Later...CDBEAM

Hmmmmm ??? Maybe this ???? Nice colour hey ??? NO....but it is functional !!!! Not cheap !! But sure easy to swap the battery !!!!...Ahhhh...just spray paint it with Fusion flat black !!!! ????

Maybe borrow from the Portable drill world !!! They use 12v....and can be not too pricy !!! SOoooo...it is a pointer...with a handle !!! Big deal !!!! With the weight of two (2) RGB modules, Optics and 12 VDC battery...one MAY need a handle to hold this sucker !!! ???

OR....hack this.....

Ryobi HJP004 12 Volt Cordless Lithium-Ion Drill / Driver Kit 33287166046 | eBay

Interesting color !! NOT my first choice.....just thinking of 12VDC options here !! :undecided:
My goal is NOT to look like " Buick Rogers " here....just find an off-the-shelf host for the build !!!

Yes...a custome host unit could be machined....but....for 3X or 4X the cost of this Ryobi !!! Hacking this to use existing/off the shelf components will also be a challenge....but...possible ~!!!

As it is now...work on this project will not start till 2017....just backed up !!...So I have time to search for other host candidates which sport a 12VDC Lithium pack !!!

ANYONE find anything....PLEASE post a link on this thread !!!

OR....THIS MAKITA !!!! Cheap !!! Just gonna be hacked anyway !!!!

Added note:

Eeeee...not so cheap...needs a battery and charger !!!....Will check out local Home Improvement Big Box stores....maybe get a Christmas Deal ????

The 10k sliders that I used were just for prototyping and to test the unit.
I've bought a set of tiny 2k sliders for my actual project and to fit in the host.

Check out my thread for more pics.

OK then !! With THAT small a slider....YES......I like it !!!! Hey Mateusz...Are you reading this ??? Jump in.....You will be making the engines for these !!! What ever became of the member..." Multimode " ???????......AND....WHERE is LAZEERER ????????????????????????? Anybody know ???? CDBEAM

HHmmmm ???? Another possible host candidate !!

See https://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10005078/1398604-trustfire-tr-s700-7-cree-xm-l-t6-1-mode-3800

But...then....seems a shame to hack the crap outta this !!! It is SO nice !!!

Now.....The Makita 12V Flashlight will be about $ 90 with 12V LiPo battery pac and charger........I gotta check out what Home Depot has !!!

I am leaning toward the Makita....and I do not think anyone has coupled a build with this commonly available platform yet !!! ???

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Makita-12V-...b0821b0&pid=100005&rk=6&rkt=6&sd=112118626377

And...I think the two (2) RGB modules will be hungry Lil'Suckers !!! Dunno...I mean...we are driving six (6) diodes here !!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all you Turkey's out there !!!
