Default NUBM44 build

I just finished my latest build. It is a 450nm NUBM44 in a 25mm Copper Module with a Super X-Drive set at 4.5A from DTR.

The host I purchased off ebay. It's a 3 cell 18650 (convertible to 2 cell) flashlight that has tons of space for a large heatsink.

https://imgur.com/9ufEQhy

https://imgur.com/G3awh5n

https://imgur.com/GjfBARy

The focus adapter was my first attempt at using a rotary dividing table. I messed up the spacing on the second hole because numbers are dumb. To have 8 equally spaced holes I needed to turn the handle 5 times to locate for each hole. Because I'm super duper extra smart.... I turned the handle 8 times for the second hole.

https://imgur.com/S68zoQj

https://imgur.com/PPNwiQN

https://imgur.com/dZ6OTtA

All in all it came out satisfactory. It meters at just over 6 watts, but drops quickly as it heats up (or my batteries sag). It becomes warm to the touch after a minute or so.

https://imgur.com/mJi1izI

I'm using a piece of local basalt as a beam dump. When I focus the beam to a pinpoint crazy shit happens.

It melts the rock leaving little scars of obsidian. The Mineralogical Society of America says that basalt melts at about 984°C (1803.2F) to 1260°C (2300F).

Nice build, T, the focus adaptor looks good, hell, we all have those "super duper extra smart" moments.

Must of fixed it as I see it now.
Nicely done T I assume you machined the sink also? and what lens are you using as the barrel looks dark like a 3 element, and at 4.5A I would think these new 44's should hit 7W's.. You did mention the battery sag though..

I can totally believe that T_Warne, I'm still surprised by the power of a NUBM44. Not many things could be used as beamstops I found. I've never had to focus one yet.

Thanks guys.

I turned the heatsink and focus adapter on my new HiTorque 7x16 mini lathe form LMS.
This is the dividing head that I used. The thing is a beast and much larger (and heavier) than I expected it to be.
The lens is a three element. I was expecting higher numbers for the output also, but I'm not going to complain. The beam scorches just about anything it touches.

Nice little setup!! and again great work
6W+ is on par with a 3 element and with the tighter I can imagine it being a nice scorcher..
Not to have you worried but hasn't there been some members mentioning they lost a NUM44 because of the 3 elements back reflection?
I ran one on my 4A set 44 for a while and it survived, so could be a myth..

Default Re: NUBM44 build

Very nice NUBM44 build, Ted. I didn't know you bought a lathe. That must make things a lot easier for you. I still have to put mine together as I also have the OPT 6X cyl lenses along with a BB6 set at 4.5 amps. I'm not surprised it melted the basalt you use as a beam stop. If you can get it focused down to a point, that is a lot of power density in the beam profile.

+ Rep.

Default Re: NUBM44 build

the output looks good if you are using a 3 element lens,i though you used a G2 for metering it.

With a single element aspheric lens in place of a three element one, I would expect to see more than a few mW increase in power. Could push it close to 7 watts. As long as you ar going to use this for close burning, I would have forced air to keep smoke, vapor and debris off the lens. It you decide later to add a cyl lens pair for better correction of the beam, the single asphere will work best to focus onto the cyl lenses.

Paul, I don't know how anyone building from flashlight hosts can get by without a lathe. I bought this one to replace my little old cummins tools lathe I had for years.
This new lathe is awesome. Strong, smooth, quiet, and much bigger. I'm very happy with it.

Lifetime17, I really like this host now that I'm moving on to the higher power diodes.
The capability to use either 2 or 3 batteries is convenient. The head holds a huge heatsink. It's very inexpensive.
