Nichia UV surplus diodes.

so, every once in a while i like to search FleaBay to see if there are any diodes like the ones styropyro got, especially from nichia, since they make some pretty awesome diodes, like 476, 488, etc etc (too bad they cost an arm, leg, firstborn child, and your favorite pet).

I haven't seen anything since styropyro got his, but today i found this....
Nichia 20mW 375nm diodes

Obviously this is pretty cool. 200$ a piece doesn't seem half bad, seeing as i don't think UV diodes have existed yet (please correct me if I'm wrong, but i have never seen or heard of any). I'm also not sure of what uses they have, since they would be obliviously invisible to the human eye. But still, I'm sure they will be snagged by someone here on the forums.

So i have a few questions.
How do people keep getting these samples from nichia?
Will we start to see more of these typed of diodes pop up, and eventually start seeing them more readily for sale? I don't think so, but I dunno; anything could happen.

edit: also, how the heck do you pronounce "Nichia"? is it "Nitchia" or "nickia"..stupid question but i gotta know

Yea, but where the heck did he get these :O
part of me thinks that Nichia sends these out to people and monitors them, so they can get some real world testing done by people. after all, there's only so much you can do in a lab. i would imagine there's a very different experience between lab testing, and hobbyist testing....because honestly, no one would buy these but experienced hobbyists.

It's $900 for just one...

Also, they've existed for several years, just at very high prices. 473, and 488nm diodes have existed for a long time as well. There are even 622nm C-Mounts requiring 5C to run. There are hundreds of weird diodes out there, just for a price. Interested in a watt of 690nm? About $500.

And they aren't 476's. His does that, they were individually metered. I think the rest did 475.

Coherent has had the Cube out for a while.

One of the units offered is 375nm at 16mw.
But like all coherent cubes, sapphires, compasses, etc. - your wallet will know it when you get one.

A Coherent cube just went for $450 on ebay last week. It was only 6mW, but it was a turn-key unit.

Is 375nm considered UV or near UV ? I wonder if the dot is visible on non fluorescence surfaces and what minerals will light up that 405nm doesn't.

Uh... both! :shhh: Near UV is a type of UV, just as near IR is a type of IR.

Ultraviolet UV 400 – 100 nm
Ultraviolet A UVA 400 – 315 nm
Ultraviolet B UVB 315 – 280 nm
Ultraviolet C UVC 280 – 100 nm

Yea, it's UV since its <400nm, but at the same time, it could be considered near uv, since its very close to 400nm. and Yes it will fluoresce on white surfaces, etc. anything a 405 will fluoresce on, these diodes will I'm pretty sure?

Near UV is not defined as "close to 400nm." Otherwise, that would make 442nm lasers near UV. Near UV is defined as 300-400nm.
