MAybe with a laser-supported system, like the electro-laser...even that wouldnt create a hole or crater...would blow the freaking piece of wood into pieces.

the above still needs to be answered? we are arguing about burnig but not really having a discussion about what burning is. Sarge give an answer of what and how you would like to burn. describe distances, penetration depths, and burn times.

I know that, I'm a first generation American. My family is from Straubing.

We are a lazy and cocky people, but what is the use to learn a language we will not use? If you are not surrounded by people that speak the language you learned, its pretty useless, and hard to retain. IMO the only reasons to learn another language are, if you had to work with people who spoke it, or if you are moving to a country that speak that language. Plus, like you said, half the world speaks English, so why bother?

"Chip" is right though: LtSurge should waste some thoughts...you should lower the specs a lil. My goal for my CO2 rifle is writing on styrofoam...melting ice...but on a distance of 2 meters...of course all the other nonsense as well: Matches, tape, whatnot.

You should think about your goals again...and lower the level a lil. Check out whats possible today and then go for it.

So basically, what I am aiming for currently wouldn't be feasible or cost-effective, even though there's a safe bet SOMEONE in this forum might devise something to fix that ;3

But not now. For now I will get to work on building my first ever laser using what I know from here.

What's wrong with kipkay btw?

Kipkay likes to run laser diodes without drivers. That will cause them to experience "thermal runaway" where the diode will get hot and pull more and more current until it eventually just blows out. You need a driver to run any laser diode worth keeping. Do a quick search here on the forum and I'm sure something will come up.

No driver? Thats new to me. I use LM-drivers...not high end, but all you need if you just wanna run the diode without show-plans.

I have written this quiet some times now, but one more time: Lasers arent weaponized YET! But even if I get alot of negative feedback (buuhuuuu) again:
In the near future there will be ray-guns...wont look like StarWars, but no projectiles anymore.
Microwaves, particle-beams (laser-supported) and other weird stuff will become smaller and smaller. Check out 1W 445nm diodes...best example there is.
Even the american army just found out, that THEL is a nice toy, but senseless. DPSS is the future.

Think what you want, in the end I will be the one smiling and thinkin of this and other threads

I can't say a lot, but the companies working on this are customers whom I support. And yeah, all the new developments in "tactical" lasers (vs. Strategic, like the 747 ABL) are solid state.

Lasers that fit on small aircraft and trucks are where the bleeding edge of battlefield laser technology is at

i personally feel that commercially available rail guns will be here before ray guns. it seems they would use similar power requirements but the projectiles in a rail gun are easer to make than a laser.

So....you support the Raytheons and such....interesting. Even if the latest DPSS (there were a few more letters before the D but I forgot which) laser is not IronMan material...dont wanna know what those dudes are hiding, when I watch some utube-vids.

Laser-guided-energy and the Airborne-laser, even mobile THEL are not even close to be declared as weapons, which might be found on a battlefield THESE days.
The only portable laser-rifle is a green blinding laser...

What do you think about all this stuff?

The personal-railgun is as far away as the laser-rifle...the have a common catch: The power-source.
Lasers might be more sensitive to shocks and hits, but a Railgun, as cool as they are in video-games: You have to change or clean the rails after "a few" shots...plus the BANG. I am more into Coilguns. Quiete and durable...

You're correct. Even these first generation 'weapons' won't be direct-use on enemy troops.

The recent tests with the tactical airborne laser seem largely intended for an anti-material role. Like burning the heterodyne off of a radar dish at an enemy anti-aircraft site, or quietly burning a hole in the hood of a truck to disable it's engine, and remove a possible source of escape from insurgents etc.

Another area of interest has been to give a new tool to EOD teams destroy/detonate/disable IED's and battlefield unexploded ordnance.

Good old-fashioned kinetic energy from bullets, missiles, and bombs is just way too efficient for us to replace them with energy weapons any time soon. And these systems are capable of indirect fire (over hills, behind walls etc.) which is a major limitation of energy weapons, and even ultra high-speed kinetic systems like rail-guns and hypervelocity line-of-sight missiles.

Go behind a hill, turn the corner around a building, or get in a ditch, and they're useless. Such is not the case for artillery shells, missiles, and mortars.

Well...a railgun can fire a projectile spreading into several pieces...like an artillery. But way better range than any artillery...
Every weapon has is disadvantage...speaking of disadvantage: Energy weapons with the weakness of ballistic-weapons. Thats why I dont like chemical lasers...even if they are so damn powerful.

Regarding burning thru a hood of a truck: I saw what it looked like ;-)
But the first tests on a missile...took 30 secs to blow the bastard.

You need a great big solid-state Ruby laser, pumped with a big ol flashbulb. Many watts in, all out in a split second. Will burn, many Gilettes of power. But it's dark red.
