Surprisingly I have found nothing attempting to search for info on these. Are the (im assuming ir) diodes found in the LPC-815 sleds of any value or significant power? I built a 300mW LOC and I already extracted the other diode so its ready to go if its worth it.

Well, they should be usable laser diodes. I don't think anyone would consider them valuable, but they should be able to produce something in the order of 100 to 200 mW at 780 nm.

I suppose the reason few people use them is because they are less powerful than the red diodes, and much more dangerous since the light is hardly visible. I would strongly suggest using protective eyewear whenever you experiment with these diodes - something that appear dim and dull can actually be very hazardous, and its not likely you will blink or look away when you hit yourself in the eye with the beam either.

I've gotten 300mW out of one direct driven at 2.0V with an Aixiz glass lens. This was severely overdriven though. I could see the mode shift during use.
I think that 200-250mW should be no problem for these diodes. Although... I have no idea what the manufacturer's rating is.
They are not weak. ;)

I got these direct driven at 2 aa cells.. dunno why it won't burn't out, but it was able to burn a lot even in the sled (without extracting and flushing into aixiz)..

Are there any cheap drivers out there suited for maxing out such a diode? I dont have any real use for it but if I have the diode i might as well see what it can do.

I think groove v2 with one Li-ion is perfect upto 250-300mW.
The pinout is the same as LOC.

edit) I have tried several 5.6mm 780nm ones from various CD burners, DVD burners etc. I think 5.6mm 780nm from LPC-815 is the most powerful upto 250-300mW.

AFAIK from the (rare) datasheets I've seen passed around ~120mW at 180mA seems to be the manufacturer rated maximum.

Last week I built a couple of 780nm from LPC with groove2 powered by one 10440.
260mW, 280mW.

Hey.. I've got 4 or 5 of these 780nm diodes measuring 3.6mm. Do you know the dimensions of yours? What lens module/heatsink did you use? I've been driving them with an LM317 based driver; They start to lase at ~70ma and I've driven them up to 120ma for short duty cycles. Even at 80ma they burn while unfocused @ 2mm so I see some potential here. I'd like to get one of them into a host and drive them @ >200ma I'm just having a hard time finding info on a 3.6mm module. Thanks in advance.

The diode I pulled out looks like it would fit into a Aixiz module...I never actually measured though.

Theres only two diodes in the LPC right?!

Yeah, the IR diode is also 5.6mm just like the red, so it should fit an aixiz module fine.

Hi. sampson.:)

780nm IR LD from LPC-815 is 5.6mm at its flange.
It'll fit in Aixiz.
I built mine with red glass lens and drlava's groove2.

I used to use flexdrive but 780nm's were burned at over 250mA.(<200mW)
Recently I used groove2 and some 780nm's were safe even at over 300mA.
A few were successful, and a few were failed.

I don't have much knowlegdement in electronics, but I think there might be a problem with "the spikes" and "the ripples". ---especially driver-specific ripples.
I hope some expert member here could explain this.

^^ Shin,

I now have a digital caliper and a 10 pack of aixiz modules! We do have burning success with this combination and a ROG8811 style LM317 driver on a 5V supply.. even as low as 80ma will easily cause black tape to instantly smoke. 140ma is cutting tape with relative ease. I'm working towards ~200ma for a small lab build.

Thanks for the info guys!

Do you see a color on white paper with the 780nm diode ? Or is it just invisible.
