Infrared Burner Cigarette Lighter

I was hoping to make a cigarette lighter from a laser pointer (on the cheap).

The lighter would have a little barrel that the to-be-lit cigarette would slide into. Inside the barrel, facing the to-be-lit cigarette would be a laser, lighting from point-blank range at the flip of a switch. When the cigarette is taken out, the barrel would be sealed. I figure this design is pretty safe/foolproof...Yes?

I'm posting in this subforum (IR lasers) because I want to know if a CD burner diode would be sufficient. Let's just say the drive speed is 52x. If these diodes are unlikely to be of use, and I end up getting a DVD burner diode, would I need a condenser for burning so close? (condenser question applies to the IR diode too)

What say ye?

I don't smoke, but when you light isn't it usually when it's in your mouth? This is trouble if you accidentally hit your eye :-/, or if someone stumbles on your false lighter :eek:

Well, I don't smoke either...this is a gift for a friend. I'm pretty sure they don't have to have it in their mouth when they light it. I think people that light and suck at the same time are just in a hurry. :p

The way I see it, there'd be holes in some places to allow smoke to escape, as an indicator that the cigarette is ready (and provide enough oxygen for the combustion). How I'll keep the IR beam from reflecting out I'm not sure of at the moment.

I think I'll put a warning sticker, for someone that picks it up.

Whoops...I misread your post. I'm not sure how my friend smokes. Maybe the way you described.

Oh, I see what you mean. It wouldn't be that bad of an idea but make sure your friend understands the danger and to not let it out of his sight..everything seems like you have it safe proof. My argument would be save yourself the trouble and buy a nice lighter for him :)

I figured the advantage to a laser lighter would be a greater lifespan, assuming batteries are changed and it's not dropped into the bathtub.

You'd need either a DVD diode or a higher powered 808nm diode. A CD burner diode is insufficient.

If by condenser you mean a focusing lens, yes. You will need one. Wouldn't it be easier to buy him a fancy $5 lighter? It would work better, be less dangerous, and more aesthetically pleasing. The only advantage I can see for a design of this nature is the notion that it's laser powered!

Yeah, that's what I meant.

"Laser powered!" is exactly what I'm going for. It'll be nice to have a project to work on too.

im thinking that the burning cigarette would damage the lens or diode itself, because i once wrecked a diode from lighting a match to close to it.

Dunno if its in your budget, but power-wise I just posted a deal that may help your project:

It still takes a bit of effort to light a cigarette with a laser, but at 900mW its sure a lot easier than trying with a 100mW greenie. You could buy one of those and then work on the barrel yourself. Also, the lasers there have a natural focus roughtly 3 inches out, so you wouldn't need to worry about a lens if you lit it at that distance.

or i got an idea, put a cheapo 5mw red from a store and get a regular lighter, put it in a little containter where he wouldnt see the lighter but when he put the cigerate in the lighter would light it while the laser would come on so he thinks that it was the laser that did it.

Or buy psueodmens laser and have a laser that would like cigerets like no other, he even shows it burning a white wall which is next to impossible for a laser but with all that power i guess anythings possible.

Remember just buy "pseudonomen's" laser for the awsomest laser ever for the best price.

Seriously tho, i thought my diy burned good id like to see what 4times the power could do :eek:
