I just saw you can get an 808nm diode on ebay for 1.00. I understand the danger of infrared light. But it would still burn like any other 300mw right? Has anyone used these? Or are these a Huge NO NO? I would rather kill a 1 dollar diode then a 15 dollar one.

Well, I don't know what the sats on that particular diode are, but most experienced people don't mess with them for a reason. The danger factor is real and no joke.

If you need to practice your soldering, just practice soldering the ends of some solid core wire together. It's even cheaper.

Can you see the dot of an 808nm at all? Also has anyone used a to-18 diode? Its a 100mw 658 nm diode I saw on ebay. Im finding out a to-18 is more a size of diode or something rather than a specific diode...

Yes 808nm is a dim red dot and to-18 is 5.6mm so it will fit a normal aid is module.

^An "aid is" module? I think you mean Aixiz.

IR diodes like this are multi-mode and are reflected by many materials. Not good for burning things.

If your a lazer noob, dont buy or attempt a IR laser build.

1. You will not be impressed by its brightness, you will not see the beam at all unless you are under night vision optics.

2. The dot is a very dull red, which makes it appear low powered to the human eye, because of this people think its under powered and "ok" to look near the laser aperture, a big no no, just because its barley visible doesn't mean it cant damage your eyes permanently.
