I'd have some copper ones made if it were me. Then look for the lens you will need.

Hi Alaskan,
3.3mm =1/8 of an inch possibly some one can make them if you can't find them.

What makes this diode so attractive to use though?

It seems to have specs comparable (to, or under that of) pretty common cd writers all over the place.

Also it would be fairly dangerous as 780 nm is barely visible, you probably will never get a visible beam out of it, though you could see the dot as fairly dim red point. Condering the power level you'll not be using this for things like cutting/engraving etc, so what is the point?

IR lightwave communication, I want to put one in a pointer for experimentation to see how well a tiny little emitter can burn, but I want to use the others to expand the outputs to several inches and try to modulate it with data like a CDROM does. Only reason I bought these particular laser diodes was the price and the wavelength, fairly low loss to water vapour etc. in the atmosphere.
