Is the 20mw 589nm Dragonlasers Spartan any good?

I want a 589nm but the 50mw one is way too bright. 20mw is still dangerous obviously, but is more along the lines of some of the overpowered chinese ones I currently have.

Basically, I just want to know if it works alright, as they used to have 5mw and 50mw with but now it seems the 5mw is gone in favor of the 20mw version.

What were you thinking of using it for? The 20mw will likely be somewhat overspec and put out 20-30mw. Not crazy powerful, but still too bright for presentation use or playing with pets.

As for reliability, it seems most people only have good things to say about the DL Spartans. I had my first one fail randomly, but they replaced it and the replacement has been problem free so far.

Realistically, the 20mW Spartans are, I believe to be the remains of underspec 50mW units. Back when they briefly sold a 30mW unit I picked one up and it's been working flawlessly. It quickly climbs to around 50mW and then once you reach the 1min duty cycle it quickly drops down to around 20mW, like in a matter of seconds!

As I'm sure you know 589 isn't a very easy wavelength to obtain, as such it won't be stable and you can't expect similar power on every run you use it. If for some reason you get a unit which won't even hit 20mW DL's will replace it or at least get you a refund! :)

I wouldn't recommend getting a 20mW Spartan. They are the bottom of the barrel - the defective 50mW lasers. It will be best to just get a 50mW one and not use it in a room with mirrors.

50mw isn't really what I want. It seems like if its defective I can return it? I do truly only want it to be in the 15-25mw range I'm not hoping for overspec.

I understand that, Galm. The problem is that the defects I'm talking about are often caused by a crystal being out of alignment, which in turn means that the beam quality will be poor. And if you end up having to return it, you will have to pay return shipping, which is quite expensive (it was ~$35 for me.)

Well the 20mW's aren't "defective" I would say. They simply don't output near close enough to 50mW's which lead to DL needing to lower at what power they were sold as. You'll still more then likely get a little over spec 20mW 589 but it won't be anywhere near 50mW's which is the only power level DL had along with 5mW's in the past.

Why they removed the 5mW option? No idea.

I wouldn't recommend DL, I and a bunch of other members have had trouble with them. Take a look at the the yellow laser link on my sig. But then again you don't have many choices when it comes to yellow.

Where do you recommend going for one that's a similar price range? I feel like I don't have many other options for a 20mw yellow that's under 400.

DL treated me very decently when my spartan died. Sent me a replacement right away and the replacement is up to spec and works great.

Wish I had a good answer to that question :/

Look what they did to rhd: http://laserpointerforums.com/f41/d...ery-displeased-so-far-lpm-7mw-24mw-64890.html

My issue was in 2014 and there were others. Of course many buyers will be lucky, but he must see the bad apples in order to be able to make an informed decision.
