This is my first laser, and I'd thought I'd start big. I'm looking at the diode online for 40 dollars
1W High Power IR Burning Laser Pump Diode 808nm 1 Watt - eBay (item 250457847504 end time Jul-13-09 16:40:34 PDT)

a laser module for 5 dollars
650nm 5mW laser module.3.2V to with lens 650 nm OEM - eBay (item 360168072204 end time Jul-12-09 18:51:14 PDT)

A flex drive v4 for 23 dollars
http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/Micro_FlexDrive.php

And the other six dollars being shipping.
The housing I have already, its an mini maglite I have lying around here somewhere...
Anything I should beware of/know first? (I think I know how to adjust the flex drive, and have a multimeter.)

the module is too small.. thats a 5.6mm module and you need a 9mm module for the 9mm diode you ordered

everything else seems ok to me

hah nice name.. tu madre = ur mom

Is there any place to get a cheaper 9mm one? I might want to do this build more than once, and keeping the total as close to 100 dollars would be great. (preferably less)

Do not use a mini maglite for a host!! They have absolutely no room for a driver. Buy an MDXL flashlight off of dealextreme.com for <$6.

Also, you will need a heatsink. A 1W diode will generate a LOT of heat, and will cause damage. You can make a heatsink out a washers glued together, and the module glued inside.

I could always use aerogel. I have some lying around the house (Its fine grain) And pouring it into the compartment I use for the diode and driver. I'd be cold as a witch's teat in there.

Uhh, aerogel is an insulator... One of the best insulators known to man... For heatsinking, you'll need something that conducts heat well, not something insulates it. Use diamonds if you want to be all extreme like that.

Come now, we *all* want to build some sort of deathray. Name calling is unnecessary.
