WTB: Scale, mortar & pestle, and other science supplies

I would love to buy some supplies for chemistry and pyrotechnics. This would call for a scale or triple-beam balance that is accurate to at least 0.1 gram. I would also like a mortar and pestle to grind my chemicals up into finer powders. If you have anything like beakers, graduated cylinders, gas heaters, condensers, dewer flasks, or basically any labware that you would be willing to sell at a reasonable price, I may be interested as well.

^What are you cookin' up? Would I be considered an accessory to anything if I were to come up with some of that stuff for you?

LOL yes...

Triple-beam is going to cost you a few pennies. The other stuff you can find cheap at flea markets if you cant get it here.

IIRC, there are quite a few restrictions on scientific glassware depending on your state laws. You might want to look into that before attempting to buy...

Selling me supplies is perfectly legal, it would be me who is punished for my actions if anything. As to what I'm cooking up, it's mostly black powder, but some other pyrotechnic compositions as well. No high explosives, though. I also love chemistry, and that's what the glassware would be for. Probably condensing halogens and stuff like that. I would love some airtight containers or something like that so that I can safely store the halogens. The mortar and pestle is just for grinding up my powders to make them burn faster.

I'm OK with everything you've just said except condensing halogens. I hate condensing halogens, and I'll have no part in supplying you with the necessary stuff. And airtight containers? Don't get me started about airtight containers. Maybe the halogens don't want to be condensed. Maybe they'd rather stay separated. Did you ever think of that? Who are you to order these halogens around? Nope. I can't help you in your quest to become lord of the rare gasses.

(But not really. I have a supplier here that has a TON of old glassware around. I'll see if I can work something out on your behalf.)

I will not condense halogens yet. I only want to store some at some point in the future. Matter of fact, if you happen to have some pre-condensed chlorine and bromine sealed in ampuoles, I may be interested.

That would be cool if you did have some glassware, though- just let me know!

As for the scale, I will need it to weigh the elements for my element GB. The order has just been shipped out, and I'm excited!

You can buy anyhing at the flea market, or second hand stores. I bought a cute little beaker for my mom to put a plant in, and the guy selling it started rambling off on how to make TNT with it LOL.

We don't really have those around here...the thrift shops where I live really suck when it comes to anything slightly unusual, the pawn shop owners sell used for more than new sometimes, and we don't really have any other second hand stores.

TNT is very hard to make relatively safely at home; you must keep it within a couple of degrees at all times and use a good lab. It is way outside of my boundaries. What a wackjob!

Wouldn't this be better for weighing things than an expensive old-fashioned triple beam balance?

As for a mortar and pestle you can pick one up at any kitchen store for about $25.

As for glassware, united nuclear has a nice starter kit for a reasonable price.

We have them everywhere around here. We have everything from white supremacist to war veterans, to mad scientists, and everyone in between. I've seen everything from live mortar shells to machine guns, and stuff you don't want to know about. Gotta love New Hampshire. Live free of die is the state motto. Maine is worst LOL.

From what I remember he said you mixed hydrochloric acid with nitro
glycerin. Then flakes would form, and that was the TNT LOL. Screw that!!!

www.sciplus.com has lots of decently priced labware, triple beam balance is $105, and basic glassware (beakers and flasks) range from $3 up to about $15 Mortar and pestles are $7/14 depending on size and such. Have a look

I just got one of these scales from DX:

I love it. Measures down to 0.1g AND up to 3kg, still with 0.1g accuracy! Well, it at least still displays down to 0.1g, I don't know how accurate it is. I used one of their 100g and 5g calibration weights and it was right on, though. It's one of the most expensive ones there, but still under $30, which is cheap for a nice scale.

I don't know how much black powder you plan on making but unless it's a very small amount just a few grams your going to end up with one popeye arm using a mortar and pestil. I have made plenty of black powder in my day and the best way is with a ball mill. get a 25 pound rock tumbler and 13 pounds of 3/4" lead balls that's all I'm gona say.....

@pseudolobster: I'mma gonna buy that! Looks good to me! It's got good reviews, and I really only need 0.1 gram accuracy, so if it's really only accurate to 0.1 grams, that's okay too.

@Tech_Junkie: Did this guy, perchance, have some finger/arm stumps on him? Hydrochloric acid plus nitroglycerine doesn't sound like a good idea to me. And (well you obviously know this) that won't make anything near to TNT! I wish we had cool shops like that around here, I have to buy everything online. If that scale is not accurate, I will just return it. It's not too hard to tell. Just weigh water, it's got a density of 1 gram per milliliter, so I can measure out 50mL or something of water and see what it comes out to.

@Flaminpyro: Thanks for the warning! I guess I'll just hang out with my friend who has a ball mill. (He's the one that got me the chemicals anyway.)
