I have the 20G PS3 I got for Christmas in 2006 and it plays PS2 and PS1 games...

When it first came out...

I think theres too many versions of the PS3. I can think of the 20GB, 40GB, 60GB and 80GB off the top of my head.

you can always take out that hard drive and pop in your own 100,200,500GB drive.. it's really just a marketing ploy. you should get the cheapest one you can find, as long as it plays PS3 games.

there are 20, 40, 60, and 80gb versions. only 20 and 60gb versions have the emotion engine that allows them to play ps2 and ps1 games. 40 and 80gb versions have an "emulator" on the hdd but it sucks. as sk8er said you can upgrade your hdd to any size you want. sony actually encourages ppl(to an extent) to mod their consoles. theres directions in the manual on how to change your hdd. if you want a real high capacity hdd use a 3.5" hdd. you'll need a sata male-female connector and a power cable(unless you use an external enclosure.

p.s. i would try to stay away from 40gb models. from what ive read online the 40's have almost as high of a failure rate as the rrod 360's. im not 100% sure but i have a ps3 of a friends sitting here now that needs a new motherboard and drive controller(40gb).

I bought a 40GB and so have most of the people I know, none have had trouble and a few do play certain PS2 games.

My only concern replacing the HDD is how exactly the data is transfered, does it work the same was as a PC? If you have 1 HDD in your PC you will have to use a program to copy everything over to the other one.

I also heard if I replace the HDD from a 40GB to anything else I will be able to play PS2 games, how does that work?

Anyway it's not like everyone played PSone games on the PS2 so its unlikely I will play many PS2 games on the PS3. Only ones im keeping are all the NFS games and Gran Turismo games.

in the system settings there is an option to backup data. use a flash drive and back it up then switch hdds and use the same utility to put the info back on ur newer hdd. youll prolly have to use the format utility first unless the new hdd came from a ps3.

sony is in denial just like microsoft.... if you would have read the post i stated there is an "emulator" on 40 and 80gb versions that is on the hdd so yes if you put that hdd in another console it would prolly work
