I need some iodine crystals for a science demonstration and testing I am conducting, and i was wondering if there is anyone out there with them lying around?

the demonstration is one that involves the dissolving of iodine crystals in ammonia, which creates a highly unstable, but relatively harmless touch explosive. ITs harmless in that it only explodes in a large sound, similar to a gun shot. Its easily set off by even the slightest of movement

be careful of what you ask for. some people might think you are cooking meth for your "science experiment". you can get iodine from most farm or pet supply store. they use it in horse pastures so the horses' hooves won't get infected. there is an extraction method of getting the iodine crystals out of the liquid iodine you get in the pharmacy.

BTW: i know that you are not cooking drugs, but the two ingredients are the main 2 out of 3 ingredients in it.

I believe you are trying to synthesize "ANTI" aka Ammonium tri-iodine. If you aren't using it right away, keep the crystals wrapped up in a moist paper towel; this reduces it's sensitivity by tenfolds and will reduce the chance of it going off inadvertently. I use to spread ANTI slurry on the basement floors for mouse control; works much more effectively than a mousetrap ;)

If you want to make a more stable compound, instead of iodine crystals, use potassium permanganate. Same effect, just more stable to handle ;) Back in the "DAYS OF YORE" I was a CHEM. TECH MAJOR at PURDUE UNIVERSITY for almost 2 YEARS. TOOT TOOT !!! That's me, tooting my own horn ;D rob

Yep, you just leave them sitting in the ammonia for approximately 30 minutes. I believe you can get some potassium permanganate from United nuclear...

Thanks for taking that answer DIGITAL BLUE, you got to it 'fore I did ;) + FYI it IS the CORRECT ANSWER. In the lab, we used AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE, The regular AMMONIA was locked up in the janitors closet ;D ;D besides AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE works better & faster ;) BTW, make sure you have GOOD ventilation, 'cause that stuff STINKS REAL BAD & can damage your nasal & sinus cavities & you throat & lungs :'( :'( The NH4 OH is a lot worse :'( :'( :'( than the cleaning stuff, PLEASE BE CAREFUL ;)
