I recently picked up a 14-inch HeNe tube off of eBay and would like to buy an inexpensive power supply for it, preferably something under $50. I believe it requires at least 1650V DC at 6.5mA. All offers are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kyle

EDIT: I found a deal on eBay, no need for anymore PSUs at the moment. :)

What is the power or model of the laser?
For a 14-inch HeNe tube, you'll most likely need more than 1650V.

Re: WTB: HeNe Power Supply

Jimmymcjimthejim,

Thanks for the response. It's a bare Melles Griot 05-LHR-182 tube. The specs I've seen on it suggest a tube voltage of 1650V without a ballast resistor, and 2090V with a 68k ohm resistor. I saw a few supplies on eBay but most appear to not supply high enough voltage or current or are a bit pricey.

Wayne, thank you for the welcome! I've occasionally lurked LPF for several years and have learned quite a bit about diode lasers; I'm just now getting into the gas variety.

Thanks again,
Kyle

Run it at, at least 1.8KVDC (2.1KVDC is better) WITH the 68K ballast resistor.

Dave,

Thanks for the reference images; those are ones I saw credited to you at PL.

Would you happen to have a suitable PS for sale, or should I keep a look out on the listings on eBay?

Thanks again,
Kyle

I have some that are Lab-style, but they will exceed the average price of a brick-style that you could get on eBay. It takes a little patience to get the deals on eBay, but they are still there.

Peace,

Re: WTB: HeNe Power Supply

Ah, okay. Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for a good deal. Last night I found a good deal on a brick style PSU that puts out 1890V at 6.5mA. Could I run the tube at full output by using a lower value resistor with that power supply?

Thanks again,
Kyle

It should run fine with that PSU. I run one with 1.85KV. I would still use the 68K resistor. HeNe's don't act like diodes. As long as you are in the general "range" of the power needed, the output is not effected. It won't be "brighter" with 2.0KV than it is with 1.9KV

Peace,
dave

Sweet! I guess I'll be buying that PSU pretty soon.

Thanks again,
Kyle
