Default WTB/feeler UV LEDs

This is the same title as this old thread regarding the purchase of high powered 365nm LEDs.

In the old thread, Krutz refers to wanting to buy some high powered 365nm LEDs, preferably Nichia brand, but not too specific. High-powered, in the context of that thread was from 300mW to 950mW in power.

Well, after some research, 4 months later, I was looking at Mouser's inventory, and they have some 5-10W (~130mW - 1W UV output, depending on binning) 365nm LEDs by a company called LEDEngin. What more, these LEDs are at extremely reasonable prices (~$50 for 5W, ~$100 for 10W). These would be mounted, or already are, on LED-stars for heatsinking. A group buy of these would probably not save much money except in huge quantities.

I am thinking I may order one of these to see to see how they are. Does anyone see any flaws in this or alternative sources or products for purchase?

Default Re: WTB/feeler UV LEDs

5W UV LEDs for $50... that is a great price!!

One could replace the LED (star) in one of them DX flashlight. I see that they are 4.3V and 1A max. one could use a microsboot or a LM350 driver (LM317 would be fine too).

Although it is an LED, 5 or 10W is quite strong for an UV LED, do be careful, please wear UV goggles.

I may go for one, but I need to build back my laser funds

Please keep us posted.

EDIT: Never mind, you are correct, they are backordered... good... no temptation
However, they show the estimated delivery for 9/27 and 10/14.

Wink Re: WTB/feeler UV LEDs

The 10W ones are serial units (4 chips half watt in serie), you need a boost driver that can push out 18V or more ..... the 5W ones are single-chip units, you can easily use them with any flashlight body that hold 2 li-ion batteries and a linear driver .....

But as far as i see, they don't have any "star" unit in stock, only the bare SMD units 10W ..... all the others say "in order" .....

Aren't you looking for the fluorescence not the UV?
I don't know how bad diffuse UV is for your eyes but it certainly isn't good. Your are pupils dilated & a led flashlight will be more focused then an incandescent or fluorescent bulb.

Glasses might be annoying for viewing black light paints & stuff but they are helpful when searching for fluorescence. The UV can overpower it often.
