The seller emailed me and it turns out these diodes are broken :yabbem:

"Thanks for the email but the laser will not read any discs. The
diode needs to be replaced. Hope this helps"

Well, I certainly wouldn't want to call his knowledge into question, but there are about a dozen other things that can cause a sled not to read discs beside the diode failing.

I used to build <20mW lecture pointers with these "broken" sleds all the time. ;)

Not to worry. As I said above, you can do this with a PHR or a DT as well.
