Hello,

I'm selling my solid copper vintage Rayovac build, which was previously reviewed here:

http://laserpointerforums.com/f52/vintage-solid-copper-build-2-rayovac-86459.html

This build was created by me, with help from Flaminpyro, who made the heatsink and focus adapter, both of which are solid copper, along with the host body and diode module, making this a complete copper build (except for the lens housing, which is brass, however brass is mostly copper anyway.) ;P You don't really get much more copper than this. :)

It's got a 9mm 445 diode from DTR, which puts out around 2.7 watts with the included G9 lens. It also comes with two AA-to-D-cell adapters, and six Trustfire 900mAh 14500's. The whole laser with batteries weighs well over a pound.

Note that in the review thread the host is shown without the bezel ring, as it's a little beat up and IMO looks cleaner without it. However I do have the bezel (as shown in the last picture below) and will include it.

Price is $295 (was $325), plus shipping from 03824.

See the review thread for more detailed pictures, however I've included a few more here (which show the copper focus adapter, which was missing in the review thread.) Also note the bezel ring in the last pic.

Thanks!
Andy

Man, it's so cool to see that other people took this idea and have kept running with it. Cool build!

oh look, rhd's still alive.

@op, man that is one awesome look. Gonna remake that when the 1W green diodes are out, right? :D

Actually ZRaffle, ha, I was just thinking that very same thing tonight. :)

I have a bunch of these vintage solid copper hosts, and I have one special one that I've been saving for the 'next big thing'. (It's a three D-cell monster, in great condition.) Turns out a 1W green is about the best thing you could wish for, as the 520 green just looks amazing against the copper, IMO. I can't wait to do that build. :)

Thanks for the kind words guys. This build wouldn't exist if it wasn't for your vintage inspirations.

oh look, rhd's still alive.

I still check in every few months to snoop on the evolution of the hobby :)

I actually came by the other day to look for a boost driver. I wasn't too impressed with the state of the boost driver landscape. Nobody has anything in stock that can do 2.3A and is tiny. So I put together something I may toss into the wild in the coming weeks. I won't have time to do much more than test one prototype on a 9mm diode and kick the eagle files out there for everyone else to play around with. But maybe that will be of some help. I've sent a couple versions out to Oshpark for fabbing, and the smallest of them is absolutely tiny (exactly 50% the footprint of a Flexdrive).

Anyway, andrewb, I really didn't mean to threadjack. Sorry about that. Really awesome build! What a beauty to part with, I hope it goes to a good home.

Greetings,

That build is just gorgeous !!
There aren't enough builds using such a classic for a host. A bit pricey but worth every penny.
Good to see RHD is still with us !!

Good luck with the sale!

cheers,
Moe

The diode is pressed directly into the heat sink right, not a module put in the sink with thermal paste and a set screw? I believe this is desirable and much superior to the modules, I imagine thermal conductivity would be increased somewhat. This is a beatiful laser, unfortunately I can't take her from you so bump.

Hi Shakenawake,

No. The diode is pressed into a copper aixiz-style module, then the module was pressed into the heatsink, using thermal paste.

There is a set screw in the heatsink, however the fit was so tight I didn't have to use it. Instead, the module is held in place by friction alone. You could press it out again to change the diode if desired, as it's not 'permanently' pressed in there, but it's tight enough such that it's not going anywhere on its own. You'd need a vise to get it out.

Thermal conductivity-wise, this should be pretty good, though not quite as good as a direct press-fit sink. (I wanted to retain the ability to have other diodes in there if desired, not just a 9mm, so that's the tradeoff.)
