Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

I actually ordered two of these to experiment with. I'm thinking that they're capable of much higher outputs and that they've just been potmodded down to be safer. I wonder if these would have phr diodes or something in them. Anyway my plan would be to just turn the pot back up a bit and maybe these would be fine doing around 50-80mw.

well i just measured the distance on google earth and it was 273M, its hard to say how big the spot was because it was so dim but if i was right that would give 3.6mrad. I have no way of measuring its output hopefully someone else who gets one does

That is a very long distance, and like you said, they are very dim.
Even my 100mW can barely be seen at 100 FEET let alone alone 10x that distance :p

Let me know if it works. Thanks.

Re: New Stock of Overspec 5mW Green

got mine today, no dimming issues so far. found some half dead AAA's laying around from over a year ago from my CNI 95mW. popped a balloon at about 3 inches melts plastic too. will test more after i get some fresh batteries. i est about 35-40mW as the beam is visible in sun lit room

edit: bought new batteries, doesn't seem to be a difference. which is good imo because that means it will keep its power till the batteries are completely dead

So, your new batch doesn't have the dimming issue? I can take a few less mW if that issue is gone. Sending payment right now.

EDIT: Forgot that my debit card was stolen and I have to wait for the new one before I can order. Definitely sending payment as soon as it arrives!

Re: New Stock of Overspec 5mW Green

I know what makes 'some' of these cheap lasers have dimming problems. Basically they're really cheaply made and the module has no real support in the laser other than the pins of the diode itself. When pushing the button down it actually knocks the diode out of alignment with the crystals causing beam issues and dimming.

To fix it just use a toothpick or something to epoxy the driver to the walls of the laser. Worked for some of my cheapo greens.

These have a little plastic support for the PCB that holds the button.

Re: New Stock of Overspec 5mW Green

the spring in mine doesn't seem to want to keep tension. every few minutes i have to take apart my laser to pull out the spring. otherwise the laser cuts in and out

Maybe try putting like a dime or something between the two batteries :p It'll raise the height of the batteries towards the spring and still keep them connected.

Disclaimer: I haven't tried this so I don't know what it'll do/if it'll work.

Re: New Stock of Overspec 5mW Green

I use a small piece of coiled up solder in my newwish pen that I cut the spring too short on :cryyy:

Re: New Stock of Overspec 5mW Green

Got my 3, 2 were very stable so I gave those to my two friends that wanted one but the third takes a good 30 seconds to warm up and then it was still not as bright. Here is a video. The second laser in my video is the one where the lens fell out so I removed the tip and took it out all the way but using the same batteries.

Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

I think the divergence is kinda crappy, at 100M it was barely visible and id say 2M in diameter.

Build quality is good for $9 I think I dont have any better lasers though, I like the matte finish and the on off button feels like it will last but its not tight enough and rattles

I got this one because its the least visible color and strength and Im using it for lectures (and fun) I had an instructor use a green laser and it was too bright for me
I just got mine in the mail and the green one is nice but the 405nm does have horrible divergence (I think). When I look at it on the wall, it looks like a bunch of little dots. I'll take a picture. Maybe mine is messed up. Maybe there is a way to focus it better? It bothers your eyes when you look at the dot even from across the room(the green doesn't). It's hard to focus on the dot without noticing all the purple around it. I think it might be the same as the green, you just notice the surrounding light more. That is my Noob opinion.

Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

Also, I just had a white shirt of mine that I shined it on from across the room and it seems like a much smaller dot when it's blue. So I'm guessing the purple color just bothers my eyes and that's why it seems so shitty to me. Sorry for the pictures being so big. I took them with my iPhone, don't have anything installed to resize them with right now.
