Re: NEW Group buy for Sony 16X dvd burner diodes..

Well... I've nothing to do with this GB since my extra diodes are very happily sitting on my work table right now, but I can very much vouch for these diodes anywhere! I have one in a Dorcy mod and another in a home-made labby mod and I gotta say... THESE THINGS ARE FREAKING AMAZING!!! ;D ;D

Thanx a ton Greg;

I'm down for one. PP sent. And thanks for your kind e-mail Senkat!

This is also my inagural post here. The group buy is what sucked me in. Just what I needed! A new hobby/obsession...

This will be my first laser project, so with only one diode... pray for me that I get to smoke some balloons, and don't smoke the diode! Now I just need to go back through this place searching for what the easiest host with the lowest KDSP* is…

*Klutzy Diode Smoker Potential

LOL :D

Just a hint for you noobs buying 1 diode................

Senkat, DDL, Gazoo, myself and many others have learned the hard way that laser diodes are sensitive. We all have a box of dead LD's that gave their photons for our education which we try to share every day.
You see reports of DIY reds and they look easy, but we don't often say how many we toasted to make it.
PLEASE be advised that you may need 2 or 3 for your own education.
Stay on the trail and go carefully as you build.

Re: NEW Group buy for Sony 16X dvd burner diodes..

Today -- with all this humidity, I handeled it like a piece of popcorn !! I was sweating so bad there would be no static to worry about. In the drier months, I short the leads with a drop of solder, conductive foam or alum foil.
The big problem for noobs is providing a stable current source for the LD. Start at a safe level and work up as your nerves will stand !!!! Circuits and current settings are found all around these forums.
These SenKat diodes appear to have better output than to original Dr_LAva diodes. Technology marches on.

Re: NEW Group buy for Sony 16X dvd burner diodes..

Nicely said Mike. I'm on my third project with these diode... now that I finally got some time to work on something! It's basically a complete DIY from scratch on how to power these things up for dirt cheap actually. The whole thing would be the price of a Dorcy flashlight. I gotta say though... THESE THINGS ARE BRIGHT!!! AND THEY ARE AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!! Honestly, I think ordering any less than 5 is probably a waste of a GB opportunity. To add to what Mike said... I burnt 2 BluRay diodes ($90 a piece) and I went through 4 DVD Burners myself before I finally got the hang of it! Once you get the hang of it though, it becomes second nature. I seriously advise everyone to get at least 3 of these... Let me explain. When you get 1, and if you burn it, you would either have to wait for the next GB, or end up paying $50 a piece for DVD burner diodes which in themselves are a bunch of crap as we all know. Taking them out is a chore, and a risk in itself.

P.S. I have actually been waiting for the next GB since Dr_Lave had his months ago, so GB's for LD's are not a daily thing ;)

Hope that explains it a bit :p

So is it bad to touch the diode with my hand? What do I use to handle it with?

Just as Mike said, I would suggest making sure the leads are connected.

The best thing to do is to either figure out what you want to do with it, or where you wanna place it before you even take it out. Then, take it out using a plastic tweezer or something like that. Put it on a wooden base/table/platform. The first thing I do is get the cables ready that I will be connecting to the diode leads. I start by connecting the leads from the other side of where the diode would go, and then proceed to connect the diode afterwards.

I'm not sure if that made much sense, but if you still need more clarification let me know. I can provide pictures if needed.

I have those rubber things that go on your fingers (individual fingers... like a condom for your finger, and just as uncomfortable ;D) and I use them when I hold the diodes and what not. It is good because I don't leave any residue on the lenses/diode... etc. And it's also good because it keeps my charge from getting to the diode. :) Again, just like a condom... lol (I hope I'm not offending anyone by saying condom so much, but it's not such a bad word, is it? :-?)

Finger COT, I believe is what you are trying to say :p LOL !! Now, a word of advice for those that wanna run right out and get surgical glves, or finger condoms (LOL !!) Make sure you get teh NON-POWDERED type...that is very important. The powder is very fine, and can kill your lenses, either by abrasion when you try to clean them, or by blocking some light and making funky reflections and shadows :p

I have a grounding mat that I work on - it is plugged into hte electrical socket - JUST the ground part, that is ! And the pad comes with a small metallic plate that I can use to discharge any static prior to handling stuff :)

I have never taken any precautions against ESD and have not lost a diode due to ESD....knocks on wood. During the winter season when the humidity is lower, I will need to be careful.
