There's much to chose from, you should narrow down what you are looking for.
Color? Red, Green, Violet, Blue are the usual suspects.
What's your budget?

Do you want to look at a pretty beam or are you a pyro?
EDIT: I just looked at the thread title and realized you want to burn.
So I suggest you get your feet wet with a focussable 200mw red, they can be had cheap <40~50$.

I have a 100mW rayfoss green, here is there site to my exact laser, theres is 76.00 shipped, mine I would sell for fifty dollars plus your choice of shipping including battery and charger. I live in Kentucky. You need to order some goggles for whatever WL you are going to be buying with or before you buy your first laser!
100mW will burn and light matches and pop balloons, but its not a 1.9W blue like I have so matches dont light in one second.

but you NEED eye protection first.

You need eye protection for any laser >5mW, including the 100mW you're selling. Just a note, so that if you do sell that, tell people they need eye protection, which you neglected to do. Not trying to be rude, but just a thought.

Hello,
I am also from Michigan (Wayne County)

Buying from members on these forums, or building you own are the best two options. Some of the best prices come from these forums, and for top notch stuff. You really can't beat LPF.

---------------

For burning, you cant go wrong with a 445nm blue.

But... you absolutely need the correct wavelength safety glasses for them....

IF this is your first "real" laser (by real, I mean not the cheap ones that you get at a convenience store) you should really read up on some of the safety tips here.

These 500mw - 1,500+mw 445nm blue lasers will burn like crazy, and also blind you that quickly.

Even from a reflection its not good. Just staring at the dot without safety glasses while your trying to burn something can cause eye damage with a high powered.

If you are going to purchase a prebuilt laser purchase from the people here! I purchased a 1 watt 445nm for $180 here from Yobresal. Great piece and he shipped it out the same day I purchased and paid. Don't waste your money on high dollar factory built lasers. Also if you buy one stateside you wont have to worry about the laser being confiscated and loosing your money!!!!

@jws I believe this is his first laser and 1W is not the best starting point. Threre is really no practical use for anything over 500mW except for novelty. For a first laser nothing over 200mw is needed.

So the lower powered lasers have a practical use in mind with buyers and are not being purchased nearly universally because of the novelty factor alone?

Seriously, how many people buying lasers here, particularly hand helds, have ANY practical use for them, much less the purchase being based on any sort of need?

Inform the guy of the risks, dangers, and precautions needed, and let him buy what he WANTS without trying to talk him out of his desires.

Heck, I can remember decades ago a computer salesman telling me that no one NEEDS more than 32K of main RAM and nothing faster than a 2mHz Z80 processor chip......

And lord only knows how many people asked me what I NEED my guns for....

Practical uses? Seriously?

Let's be honest about this. These are really just TOYS for the most of us. Nothing more and nothing less. The powerful ones are dangerous toys, but really no more than what a handgun can be.

The only video I saw recently that showed even somewhat of a practical application of a handheld burning laser was when a guy used it to burn a mosquito. Now THAT's a PRACTICAL application in my book! Can't wait to terrorize the flies and mosquitos around here myself. :eg:

Speaking of which, is there a thread anywhere on this site where people are itemizing actual practical uses of their lasers? I need to have them on hand for when my wife asks me that question..... :)
