Yeah... I seem to remember a Die4Thing LPM that was sold on eBay for a while...
Robin doesn't sell them anymore because the parts were no longer available and
costs went up drastically.... :-?

The Die4thing is one great and accurate LPM, too bad he never added data logging to it though.
It too was not a Therompile unit, rather it uses a TEC, but does go up to a full 3W's.

I also remember a Kenometer that everyone waited until the last minute to
purchase and a lot of members missed out when the parts dried up.... :-?

Those Meters came with a Genuine Coherent True Thermopile and a nice case; parts did not dry up, but do cost more now though.

I also remember that DX no longer ships to the USA... and people that were
sure the DX200 Dilda would always be available and put off buying one till
the last minute... now have missed out..

These are still available through many other outlets and options, you can still easily get them.

I've noticed... that if I really want something uniquely rare I will get  it when
it's available.

Hey Ken... I think at that time there was no Data Logging available... and if you're referring to the
eBay units... they do not include data logging... that is an Option. We put one up once in a while
for the bargain hunters and to keep the LaserBee I in the minds of potential buyers..

Unique is something that is "one of a kind" IMHO... We don't see another inexpensive Thermoplile
based 1Watt Laser Power Meter for the Hobbyist on the market today... Correct me if I'm wrong.

Rare... I'll have to give you that one... Maybe it's not rare.... since we have inventory of the LaserBee I in stock.

A TEC is a thermoelectric cooler (TEC) also known as a Peltier device.  Peltier devices are commonly used in camping and portable coolers and for cooling electronic components and small instruments. The cooling effect of Peltier heat pumps can also be used to extract water from the air in dehumidifiers.

The effect is used in satellites and spacecraft to counter the effect of direct sunlight on one side of a craft by dissipating the heat over the cold shaded side, whereupon the heat is dissipated by thermal radiation into space.

Photon detectors such as CCDs in astronomical telescopes or very high-end digital cameras are often cooled down with Peltier elements. This reduces dark counts due to thermal noise. (A dark count is the event that a pixel gives a signal although it has not received a photon but rather mistook a thermal fluctuation for one. On digital photos taken at low light these occur as speckles (or "pixel noise").

Thermoelectric coolers can be used to cool computer components to keep temperatures within design limits without the noise of a fan, or to maintain stable functioning when overclocking. A Peltier cooler with a heat sink or waterblock can cool a chip to well below ambient temperature.

The LaserBee I definitely does not use a TEC to determine the power output of a heat source, i.e. laser beam

Electron.... If some one needs to learn what a Thermopile is... it would definitely be you....

I'll do my best to explain it as we have learned it in the past year of the LaserBee's development.......

The first line of the Wikipedia link above states:

"A thermopile is an electronic device that converts thermal energy into electrical energy"

A Thermopile is NOT a device that converts Electrical Energy Into Thermal Energy...... That is a TEC

Anyone that has done his research will also know that the "Peltier Cell" can be used in reverse...
and that is known as the Seebeck Effect...

Obviously you didn't know that either so here is the info on that ..

In that explanation it states:-

"The Seebeck Effect is commonly used in a device called a thermocouple (because it is made from a coupling or junction of materials, usually metals) "

(Before you question that statement.... 1)Usually metals but not always.... 2)A Thermopile is multiple Thermocouples connected together)

The Peltier cell uses the same Seebeck Effect with semiconductor P an N juctions instead of metals.

A TEC is a Thermo Electric Cooler.... and as such is used to COOL or HEAT by applying power....
and.... It is therefor not used in the Seebeck Effect mode.

The Sensor used with the LaserBee I is in the Seebeck Effect mode and therefor a Thermopile

You are exactly correct TheMonk... If you look close to those Zig-Zag metalic traces...
you'll see a dark trace connected to a light trace and so on around the circumference..

Where a dark one touches a light one..... that is called a Thermocouple....

Since there are quite a few connected together.... it is called a Thermopile.

I have it hooked to a 9v adapter and its on 24/7 with the pc I log with. Its been on since a week after I bought it, except for the occasional power outtage ;D 3 or 4 months, and many tests later [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]
