Batch 2 done and dusted! Please post if you are interested in a kit, as there won't be any more runs unless there is enough interest.

So, what is a laser harp?

A laser harp is a device that creates many laser beams, of which people can block using their hands to create an infinite amount of sounds.

This laser harp is known as "frameless", because it does NOT require sensors overhead. Installing sensors overhead is time consuming, and sometimes impractical if, for example, you're a one man show.

This harp has a single sensor PCB that sits on the ground in front of you. No need for fussy sensor alignment, raising trusses etc.

It outputs MIDI signals, which is a very common interface standard. USB->MIDI adapters can be had for only $5 on eBay, or if you're already a music nut, you may even have a MIDI port on the back of your keyboard! Using MIDI allows you to program the beams to be any note or instrument you want. Guitar, drums, synth pad, whistle .. or even, a harp! :) Anything.

Read through this thread for pictures and videos of peoples harps built with this kit, or have a look on YouTube!

Cheers,
Dan

Re: Feeler: Laser Harp kits

Just uploading a new video at the moment, for those who don't know what a laser harp is

I could also sell just bare PCB's, however they are sold in lots of 10, so that depends on what kind of interest I get.

Cheers,
Dan

Interested? Yes. But I have too many irons in the fire to even think about commiting to anything else for 4 or 5 months. :(

Re: Feeler: Laser Harp kits

I am very interested. Hopefully I'll have some $$ when/if this happens. I was just wondering though, what power green are you using in yours? Also, is it connected to your computer via a MIDI to USB?

Re: Feeler: Laser Harp kits

@jcranmer - As it is cheaper to buy the components in lots of 10, I'd like to wait until we have a solid interest in at least 10 before I go ahead.

@Alexizupinhea - I used the old green module out of my laser scanner. It was removed because it doesn't perform very well under modulation, and fluctuates a lot. So I'd say it's only doing 50mW or so after modulation, but does a good 150mW or so CW.

Also, you will only require TTL modulated lasers for this :)

Re: Feeler: Laser Harp kits

OK, I have finished doing a price list, and the kits will definitely be <$120.

I still can't give a final price yet. I am working on a prototype so I can test a cheaper DAC.

Since I will need to assemble one of these and test it myself, the first run will be for 9 kits (1 for myself). However, this may not be for a little while :)

That being said, this "buy" will be done in lots of 10. Components become much more expensive in lower quantities, so if I get 15 people interested, I will need 4 more people to break the 20 point (Including 1 for myself again), or some people will miss out.

So yes, if you don't have the money right now, no worries, it'll be a little while before I prototype it and try get the price down even further :)

Please keep posting in here if you're interested, as it may help drive the component prices even lower.

Cheers,
Dan

Re: Feeler: Laser Harp kits

where are the sensor(s) does this kit need a bar over head to sense break in beam?
