The 1A max range actually can go higher than 1A output if you turn the pot all the way up. it's headroom so that it can at least make 1000 mA including manufacturing variations. Just use a dummy load and multimeter.

The pot on the groove2 and MicroBoost has stops that won't allow it to be turned further than each end, unless you really force it.
I don't have a multimeter, that was the whole point :p but thanks for the info.

BTW is my driver on its way? ;)

Yep, it should be just fine. If the battery were 4.4V then that would be a different story, but as luck would have it things work out perfectly for this combination. Also, you can do slightly better than the 540-1000 mA range which only has two jumpers set, by setting all 3 in a combination of the 390-750 range and 210-410 range.

Just in reference to the above quote. Does this mean we can access a higher current range or does it just help with efficiency by making the range narrower?

I like the new pot too by the way. Bit more to it, so an improvement.

Funny setting this driver with the new 445nm. Got to be quite careful as to where you set it so you don't damage the driver if you're using a 3.6V rechargeable as Jayrob points out too. First diodes I think I've used where you have to set it ABOVE a certain mA! :D

By setting all 3, you access a higher range, but it's only slightly higher, this is why I left it off the manual.

Yes, if you don't set it to a certain ma where the forward voltage of the diode is at least 4.06V, then it will run out of closed loop regulation, just feeding current until the diode voltage is about VBatt - 0.3.

Okay, that helps. Can you tell us the range with all 3 jumpers? So for running these 445nm diodes from a MicroBoost you need to be above 4.06V; got it. It may be worth determining the mA required to achieve this for these new LDs. It's a work around but parameters will help I think. I personally would prefer to run these from a FlexDrive and will be placing an order VERY soon. Although the MicroBoost will, I don't think it was specifically designed to drive these new kids on the block. Just high powered BRs, right?

In fact I noticed that although I initially provided 4.2V @ around 500mA from the PSU the driver went into shutdown and only 2.18V showed on my PSU. Was this a symptom of what you meant? Please tell me if I've got this wrong.

You're drivers are ace Dr.Lava so this is just to narrow down confusion if used with this hot new diode.

If your PSU went down to 2.18V, then maybe it went into shutdown, and that's what made the driver turn off. The driver will take an initial surge of current to fill its capacitors and some lab PSUs can see that as a short and shut down.

With all 3 jumpers set, the range is 590 to 1200 mA. the FlexDrive is one option, another option is to put a schottky diode in series with the blue that will drop another 300mV and that will ensure the output will be above battery voltage during operation.

I'll look out for that shutdown scenario again. After bumping the current up from the PSU it seemed to be fine but this was after trying with a battery too so the caps may have been charged from then on.

So your saying there is another setting that is NOT on the sheet? Am I correct in understanding that it incorporates all 3 jumpers like this:

Would driving the 455nm LD at/around the 1200mA generate additional heat from the driver? Would be it safe for the driver?

Just wanted to say, I really like the microboost because to get about an amp of output I simply set it to maximum range and turned the pot all the way clockwise. Awesome!

Sweet! So just to make sure, you separate that IC from the circuit and then control the circuit, NOT the IC with your PWM? It seems counter-intuitive to me, I would have thought that the PWM controlled the IC, not the raw circuit components.

The PWM does control the IC (on the other side), via that pad in the instructions.
