just be careful with selling these things! people can be really silly with lasers at times, and even though it may not look bad, it can really make you blind!!! these diodes will cut electrical tape!!!!!! can you imagine what they would do to eyes!!! i don't even want to think about that!BlueFusion said:

i saw somewhere that the IR light from DVD burner diodes would be dangerous, is that true?

They are STILL DANGEROUS though ! Be careful not to expose your eyes, or anyone else's eyes to the beam, or incidental reflections - do not aim them at any living being or thing, do not aim them at any moving object, or soon to be moving object, like a car, bus, train, or plane....etc....there are lots of warnings for these diodes, make sure you know them ALL before ordering and or using them for anything ! I am very aware of what these things can do. "selling at school" i think gives you a bad idea, I will definitely ONLY sell to responsible people I know and trust.
Other thing, elecrtonics teacher @ my school is excellent, I think I will ask him some stuff about these. Read a DDL post in GB #1 for these

I'd like to know this. The PDF datasheet also seems to tell me that if a regulated circuit is used for max current at ~275 mA that will achieve max output at 20 deg C, but if the current limiter works the mW output will drop as temp (deg C) increases.

If you plan to run these at 275 mA, you'll definitely need some kind of heatsinking to make it work for any period of time. All in all, it will still dissipate about half a watt, which is enough to heat up the tiny package and degrade performance.
When applied in a DVD burner, the diode is usually mounted on a metal slide that servers as a heatsink too. The heatsink doesnt have to be big though, something like 20K/W should be more than adequate.

Yes, and yes !
they have shipped out to me - and the dorcy jr will work without any further mods...BUT I would highly recommend that you use a 47Uf capacitor inline to remove and bumps in the power - it will only serve to lengthen the life of your diodes, and hopefully prevent any surges in power for devastating the diode !
