Re: FS: 6x sled SOLD chrome leadlight 85.00

lol they were supposed to go to 400+ma not 250 jake. if you cant look at 2 drivers that work compared to 2 that dont and see the difference its not my fault. i told you i would fix them whenever you sent them back and i will. my point is mistakes happen. shitty work is alot different from making a slight mistake.

take a pic of the 2 drivers and post it here. let everyone see how clean my solder joints are compared to what youve done.

Re: FS: 6x sled SOLD chrome leadlight 85.00

Honestly, could you people lay off for once? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but your(not addressing anyone in particular) point(s) have been made. I see no reason to keep harassing the seller and crapping on his sales tread(s)... Leave appropriate feedback via another tread/rep/etc and let others make their own decision...

FYI, I'm not defending Jake in particular. The sudden surge of disgruntled buyers/sellers that feel the need to harass the seller/buyer and trash their treads is starting to get out of hand.

EDIT: cheap=you get what you pay for
So if the quality is so bad, then why have not many people complained? He has sold like 100 lasers, and most are working fine i'm sure[/quote]

The ones I have repaired or replaced were for people that got tired/frustrated with trying to get Jake to respond and/or to fix the unit.  Most of the NOOB's are NOT "active" members of the forum.  They do not feel the need to or maybe even realize that we watch out for each other.  I'm also sure that the "majority" of his lasers are still working fine.  The problem is that if LaserGlow  claimed they were good because "the majority" of their lasers were still working fine and then gave their customers the run-around, or simply ignored their customers when there was a problem, their reputation would be in the toilet.  We would be all over ourselves warning each other about them.

Absolutely, everyone makes mistakes and sometimes components fail and sometimes a customer requires re-education about how to handle a laser.  I have had lasers fail from all of those conditions.  However, people who deal with me know that if something does go wrong, getting their lasers repaired and back in their hands (at my cost) is my highest priority.  I even do repairs for cost if the customer is the one who screwed it up (at least the first couple of times).

Not only is Jake known for bad customer service, two of the units I've repaired and/or replaced should NEVER have been sent out to begin with.  Buy his inexpensive components if you are willing to be lied to.  DO NOT buy anything built by him, or at least use a middle man to protect your investment.

Peace,
dave

Re: FS: 6x sled SOLD chrome leadlight 85.00

The Dorcy Jr. build arrived today from Jake21, packed just fine and looks good.  2 days by USPS priority from Ohio to North Carolina USA.  Keep in mind that I am new and have no equipment, so I can't judge the quality of a build from an expert's perspective.  I haven't had a chance to take pics, but it looks like a Dorcy Jr with 1/2 inch of lathed metal out the front (imagine that!).

Here is what I can say:
With one Panasonic lithium cr123 primary battery in it, the laser started right up with no warm-up time.  The beam seems very straight out the front.

I have no LPM or other laser of similar power to compare it to, but it is very bright, too bright to look at the dot indoors with no goggles.

The waist of the beam is about 3 feet from the laser (fixed focus, right Jake21?...I couldn't see a way to adjust the focus).  At 3 feet I would estimate the diameter of the beam as 1mm, but this is a good "eyeball" and not a measurement.  It is certainly not more than 2mm diameter.  More than 3 feet and the beam begins to diverge.

At 3 feet: black non-glossy fabric/plastic, for example my flashlight sleeve or a cordless phone, immediately begins to smoke.  The laser easily burned a small pit in the black plastic of the phone in 10 seconds from this distance, and it also lit sharpied matches instantly.  A non-sharpied match (generic red strike-on-box) lit after approximately 22 seconds from this distance.

I had the laser on for about 90 seconds straight, and there was a little warmth right at the aperture after that.  Very little warmth, nothing that made me worry.  I have no reason to run the laser longer than that, and no hesitation about leaving it on for 90 seconds again in the future.

All in all I am happy about the price/value of the laser, for $73 shipped, provided that it lasts awhile under reasonable use.  Please someone correct me if I seem to be far wrong here, you know what they say about a fool and his money.  Right now this fool considers his money well spent.  Thanks Jake21!

I'd be happy to answer any questions as best I can.  This is my first review and my first >30mW laser, so please be gentle  :)

EDIT:  there are differing opinions on Jake21's skills and business ethics here, and I won't (can't really) chime in on any of that.  He spells like a polecat, but that doesn't matter to me.  If there is anything else I find out about Jake21's laser or customer relations, be assured that I will report it good or bad.  I told Jake21 that I would give an honest report on this particular laser, and that is what I am doing.  I hope I am not stepping on anyone's toes, and I value the free exchange of knowledge and opinions here on LPF.  Thanks to all!

How did you get two CR123's into the Dorcy, Jake? :p

Is that why it extends out at the top? I really want to see this thing. Altho i'd be more interested in what's inside it.

Anyway, Jake, do you have a leadlight body or two, you could sell me?

I don't know what driver is in there, but i do know for a fact (i asked Jake) that you are NOT supposed to put TWO CR123's in there!

That's double the voltage it is meant for! I don't understand why it's not dead yet (trying to figure out), but don't do that!

If they do.... everyone will know who sent that crappy crooked LD with all the glue to IgorT..... ::) ::)

The person who sent me that was the poor buyer. And the builder was NOT Jake. That i know for sure (don't ask ::)), even tho i don't know who it was..

I still believe Jake's work is art in comparison. Solder blobs are not good, but they are better than no solder at all!

Otherwise, almost all my 6x sleds were badly damaged, they are QC rejects, but the diodes are good in all of them. And that's all that matters to me.. ;)

I bought three of these from him before. They are brand new (and put out the rated <5mW).

Re: FS: 6x sled SOLD chrome leadlight 85.00

Yes, it was darned tough shoving two CR123s into this laser, because it only holds one.

My mistake, there is ONLY ONE CR123 in this laser.  I don't know what I was thinking, maybe counting the spare in my pocket?  It has been a long week...updating my post now.

Haha, ok, i already wrote Jake an email with 20 questions, to figure out why it did not explode.. ;D

Looks like there was no mystery to solve.. ;)
