SHAMELESS PLUG... ;)

LOT OF TWO for $25 delivered ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. Please go to: http://us.ebid.net/indexmain.php and search for LASER DIODE.

***NOTE: according to DR LAVA, the max safe power output for LONG TERM USE is 100-140mW, the max ELECTRICALLY safe CW power rating is 180mw; the maximum PEAK power is 240mw***

Ebay is getting too greedy for me so i'm giving ebid a try, it's only a buck to list up to 25 items featured, with no FVF for a ONE TIME $49 lifetime membership! Also got laser safety filters and other odds and ends up for grabs at very low prices.

Sorry dude but you can get 200mW+ laser diodes from stonetek for 20 bucks.

EDIT: Plus you can use the discount code to get 10% off.

Is it 240mW CW or pulsed? Could you show us a data sheet? Or at least a graph of the diodes' performance? I'm not interested in buying, I just want people to know exactly what they're about to buy.

240mw is peak instantaneous pulsed power, drive up to 200mw without problems, de-can them and you can push to their pulse rating w/out problems and GREATLY increase coherence length.

The Sony diodes you mentioned are 180mw peak instantaneous power.

My laser diodes are ROHM part number RLD65PZB5

One curious thing about them is they were rejected from being installed in DVD recorders because the coherence length is TOO LONG! On an interferometer i got coherence measurements of close to 60 meters near 80mw at 25 deg C.! That is in the league of multi thousand dollar holography lasers!

This means that while they would make truly lousy DVD recording diodes they are primo holography laser diodes.

Of course you can do more mundane things with them such as burning laser modules ;)

What do you mean the sony diodes are 180mW peak? Here's their power graph, this is the kind of info we want. ;)

But never mind that, your ROHM diodes show up in Dr. Lava's graph and it looks like they top at around 140mW ::) so yeah.

EDIT: Although there's no curve and it seems that the testing was not complete, so maybe your diodes are capable of higher power. Dr. Lava, could you clarify this?

Nice chart! The wiggle/wavy part is the beginning of intermodal oscillation due to the charge confinement barrier overloading- this marks the max safe long term CW rating of the diodes.

Those long die open can diodes look mighty cool, good to at least 300mW. Who makes them?

Unfortunately that's a mystery, a member here was gathering some info and he found a supplier who would sell him the sleds with the diodes. He was planning on doing a GB, but nothing ever happened.

where did you dig up this term "intermodal oscillation due to the charge confinement barrier overloading"

Re: FS 100mW to 240mW RED BURNING LASER DIODES CHE

Translation is: Each diode has a strip of highly doped semiconductor that channels current into the lasing region. This strip is insulated on each side by undoped semiconductor material that acts sort of like a levee or dike. This dike is called "the charge confinement barrier"

When a certain voltage is reached the dike will begin to "leak" and allow a little current to take another path through it by a strange quantum mechanical effect called tunneling. The current that leaks causes the laser channel to be less and sometimes oddly enough more efficient near the leak. This causes the power to drop and rise rapidly and the modes to shift often visibly as the power is increased.

The effect is reversible until either the mirror burns out "Dim LED" or the "dike" fails and shorts the diode out. "Dark emitting laser diode!"

This effect is far worse on nitride based violet lasers since tunneling effects get worse with higher applied voltages. This is made far worse by the fact that the leaking tends to separate the nitrogen from the gallium, and EVEN MORE WORSE because the higher voltage generates more heat that causes the doping lto migrate where it shouldn't.

The neat thing about nitride diodes is you can actually see where the dike is and where it failed- visibly

Re: FS 100mW to 240mW RED BURNING LASER DIODES CHE

I had a brick of 500 of the rohm diodes you mention (purchased from the same guy, same auction).  The issue with them was that, while the intermodal oscillation didn't appear until later on their curve, their facets couldn't take more than 100mW safely from more than a few weeks.  Later model diodes have improved output coupler construction and have a a much higher attainable CW power.  This is the real reason i heard they were rejected for burner application.  The coherence was studied on these diodes for holography purposes here and generally it was found to be decent, but degraded rapidly over time.  Here again, the long die diodes are probably superior.

owned. have to say drlava has made my mind up. woot go drlava. so pretty much these diodes deteriorate too easily. and they are weak
