I do believe the finned ones have no benefit inside an enclosed host as the fins are meant to be used with airflow to remove heat from the heatsink.

inside an enclosd host the mass of a heatsink works better. having fins removes mass..

Just my $0.02

What he said!!! It is all about the thermal mass if there is no air flow to carry the heat away.
Besides the finned ones look harder to make.
Another $0.02 worth. :>)

Jmillerdoc, your 12 are going out today. I made them thicker, I just hope they fit. I guess if they don't, send them back and I will thin them down some. The fins may help a little if you take the back of the module off or cut the back of it off like I do. I want to do some with a domed top so they sit against the inside of the module, to bridge the board to the housing, may carry heat away better. If I do them that way measurements will need to be perfect though.
