So I got this Xtractaurs toy today for the sole fact of making a badass grill ignitor/bug zapper. After seeing dieselmarine's http://laserpointerforums.com/f38/im-back-my-awesome-new-10x-lazergunn-51443.html I had to make one. The diode is from the AMK SF-AW210's group buy.
Gun $9
laser $10
Components $6

For $25 it was not to bad.

Already had a switch which made this build so easy.:)

There are actually green led's in this part but I got lazy and didn't hook them up.

It is a great build (Good job!!)
But, you might want to look into another power source, you will be burning though 9V batts like crazy - they do not hold much capacity,
You are better off with Lithium Ion cells, you can get them on DX real cheap, don't forget the charger ,
2x 10440 cells (each is size of AAA) will give you the needed voltage , plus they will run about two times longer than one 9V AND they are rechargeable.
If you want more runtime on single charge, try packing 3x 10440 in one of those flashlight 3xAAA plastic pockets, I think you can more than comfortably put it where the green DNA looking this is - batteries look better than swirled plastic :D

EDIT - Something made me think you are using RKCSTR driver :banghead:
Forget the 2x 10440 part, you need 3x 10440 to run a bluray diode from LM317 driver , which that presumably is.

@TJ I was going to throw a piece of flash paper in the grill.

@Eudaimonium Yeah I may put some batteries in the dna part for longer change out times. It is a little tricky to close this sucker up with everything in place. Or a may just add a charging input in line with the battery. When I open it back up I'm sure I'll connect the leds to work when fired.

GOOD JOB BRO, THATS A VERY UNIQUE HOST !
WHAT CURRENT ARE YOU RUNNING YOUR 6X DIODE @?
HOW MANY mW'S DOES IT PUSH? MAYBE YOU SHOULD ADD A HEATSINK IT IS A PRETTY POWERFUL DIODE WHICHS GIVE OFF A DECENT AMOUNT OF HEAT. THE DIODE WOULD LAST A LITTLE BIT LONGER !

I have it running at 170 ma(3- 22ohm resistors i n parallel) DDL driver . I don't have a LPM yet so I'm not sure of the mw. I would like to use a heatsink but I haven't bought a mini lathe yet and I'm a cheap ass(I even have aluminum blanks from the scrap yard ready). So I use a very tight duty cycle.
Thanks for the comment.
What I have now noticed is that every time I make a kid type host I can foresee our laser hobby being flushed down the toilet. Even now with the wicked lasers arctic 445, I think we're all screwed. It sucks because every time I get into a hobby it becomes even more illegal. I use to stunt ride motorcycles then in Oct. 2008 they passed a law in Florida that lands you a $1000 first offense for doing a wheelie $2500 second, and third time your license is suspended for 10 years.
Sorry for the rant.:barf:

I don't agree! I think our hobby will be intact as more lasers will become available.
What are you going to become a fellon just because you own a casio or sony projector or a laser hair remover. please. Let's stop worrying.

We have a right to our hobby.

Nice build! I like see these "toy guns" turned into lasers. I had to do a search for that thing since I wondered what it was for. This is what I came across. I don't think I'd be happy with something poking me in the rear either.

Couldn't you light the grill without flash paper since you can focus it? Just put the charcoal and lighter fluid in there and then using your focused gun heat up the charcoal(which is black so it should work) and the resulting heat should ignite the lighter fluid....am I right?

PS- Nice Build!

Never tried that. Might try it some time. the flash paper works good though. Definitely worth buying some if you have high power lasers.
