hey Great, could you put that in its proper place? Group Buys - start a new topic there, you'll get more answers and it's a tad of a misdemeanor to stick a new subject in the middle of an ongoing topic.

A question.. After my first PS3 diode freaking out then all out dying on me, I said no more waiting for the addictive violet laser I wanted, and went to Gamestop and bought a used XBOX 360 HDVD drive. Score! [smiley=happy.gif]

I just built my first 803T bluray laser ;D, with a rkcstr driver pushing 87mA. It is quite impressive with what should be 60+mW

How safe or unsafe might it be to step that up to 100mA for hopefully about 75mW.. or even higher? Would I shorten it's life terribly, or is it worth the gamble for the power?

EDIT:.. Carefully looking at the graph tells me that with my glass lens I should be pushing 80mW!! ;D Now i am an even happier camper!

ok, now I promise this post will contain useful information:

my 2nd order from PSXboy arrived today, 5 more , all with the proper parts. Yum!

and... I fired up one of the red ld's that comes along for the sled ride - nobody's mentioned them yet I think - went up to 100mA just as nice... have not checked power out yet nor pushed it to limit, but will do soon. Not tomorrow, because it is 100+ degrees here and Rosie and I are headed for the high Sierra first thing in the morning. Gonna be dancing on the granite!

G-fan, how safe? sorta safe, but not as safe... you can read through this topic, and judge for yourself the level of risk vs. what risk you are willing to take. Will it be heat-sinked? Can you buy another, if this one fails? that might impact your decision.

(edit) From what I've read so far, you'd be better off improving the optics. Lots of losses with red AR coating, for example... and if you're using the "Aixiz module" you can widen that aperture on the back end of the screw-adjust lense holder. (/edit)

I read about the coatings... I am using an Aixiz glass lens, so no aperture-opening needed.

Where do I get an uncoated lens? I'd love to have one for myself Would be a plus if it would fit an Aixiz module.. I won't take a chance on killing my diode by pressing it back out..

An AixiZ glass lens is coated for red. Your power output will be halved in comparison with a clear acrylic lens.

Instead of pushing it harder, put in a clear lens and you will have MUCH more power.

Damn now I need to buy a plastic axis too I had already ordered the glass.
anybody figured out how to dissolve the AR coating yet? I really like glass and metal don't really want crappy plastic.

We should try some alchohol, that should disolve the coating. I've heard ammonia is also good.

Can't the glass ones be disassembled? You could put the optics from the plastic one into the glass housing.

right, but surely glass with no coating is better than acrylic with no coating?

ithink that would depend on what glass, it seems they use multi element in glass lenses because of the difficulty of making the correct shape with a single lens so I'm sure there are losses there also. Iwould prefer glass just because I like glass more than plastic not necessarily because it performs better. Considering that I havevs DX plastic lens that is not coated I'll probably end up using that instead of the glass one I ordered from dr. Lava with my driver, unless of course I can find a way to remove the AR coating. Excusepuntuation and spellling I'm on my cell and not easy to type. Yes I'm addicted LOL

I kinda doubt alcohol will dissolve the AR coating. Acetone maybe, but not ethanol..

But acetone will also dissolve a plastic lens. Might be worth to try with a glass one tho. Could give an extra mW or so...

I think he ordered the glass AixiZ lenses, that come in the plastic nut. JunkMonger: Did you order from e-bay?

The metal ones are from two pieces screwed together. There is a slot for a tool, but they are glued together. I couldn't open mine.

probably depends on the type of coating I know on a lot of computer screens and tv screens the instructions say to not use alcohol because it will destroy the AR coating. I'll try when I get my lens I have some acetone and alcohol.

to tell you the truth I have I have no idea what I ordered all it said was glass axis module or something got it at the same time as ordering the flexdrive from dr.lava, never really thought about AR coating issue at the time I just saw glass and said that's what I want. I already have 2 dx ones that are plastic, one of which is what I used to make my first red burner, it burn't so well that it burn't itself up LOL that's what I get for running it with the module that was in the dx 5mw red and bridging resistors ........
