I just bought a 1.5W from blord, and I was wondering do they ever die out?

If so how long..
Thanks

Sooner or later, mainly depending on how much you use it....and how you use it.

Laser diodes live normally more than 5000 hours ( a year have just <8760h), be for the LD die we all have 5W+ Lasers :D

If you don't abused it like overrunning the duty cycle of hitting the laser on hard surfaces then the laser should last long. 20min/ day is nothing.

ask blord but typical duty cycles for ~1W blues are 1 minute on 30 seconds off

Congrats on your laser. Blord makes some great handhelds. I bought one of his copper heat sink 445's this year and it has a duty cycle of 5m on/1m off... so you may want to ask him about your specific build. I usually don't run any of my lasers for extended periods (>1), so I never worried about it, but it's good to take proper care none-the-less.

Have fun, StaciiSmile, and welcome to the forum!

so basically, any quality, laser DPSS green, Diode Blue, red violet ect will work for thousands of accumulated run time if the laser is not damaged by externbal forces and not driven past duty cycle.?

Realize that most of us operate our lasers at much higher currents than what the diodes are RATED for. Diodes will usually live <5000 hours at what they are rated at, but when you shove 2.2A into a 9mm diode you are shortening the diode's life significantly. Also be careful where you store it. I once left a laser(a long time ago) in my car many days. I live in Texas. I am pretty sure the insane heat did damage to the laser diode.

Wishful thinking but I wouldn't be surprised.

Yes but a DPSS is more sensitive to temperature and vibration or being dropped than other diode based lasers because of the crystals and optics they have. A 1.5w blue should last for many years, just don't let it overheat.

alright cool well i dont drop my lasers, i use the strap, and dont leave them in the heat, so it should be good.

as for the cheap lasers, do they die so quickly because as said above they are driven way past what they should be, even much more than we do and just destroy the diode ? like a ebay 5mw diode putting out 100mw

also what would you say diodes are rated for ? like for a m140 diode and a 9mm? what are those rated for for the 5000 rating ?

Yes that would be part of it but I think its more due to them being made very cheaply in factories in China and with no quality control. Cheap lasers made in China are a gamble, you may get a good one or it may quit on you after a few days.

I don't know about life expectancy of the m140 and 9mm, I can't find any data sheets on these, anyway in the couple of data sheets on other diodes I have seen the manufacturer doesn't even say anything about how long they should last but since these are used in some expensive projectors I would think it should be more than 5000 hours. Some can last longer, there was someone here that left a red module I think a 5mw powered on for 3 or 4 years.
