What kind of metal are the 803t sleds made out of?

I thought it was aluminum so I tried to melt one down a few minutes ago... BIG mistake, after a minute of my blow torch on it the damn thing actually caught fire! Like a 2 inch bright white flame with shifting blue and green hues erupted out of the metal! Not really thinking I sprayed it with the hose, lol and that made it even bigger yet. By now the entire heatsink is roaring white flames so hot that they shattered the rock it was sitting on. I rushed to the garden and grabbed a huge handful of dirt to throw on it. That put out the flames but it smoldered like 5 minutes til the heatsink was completely gone. Crazy stuff. Just thought I'd share that, kinda wish I had gotten it on video.

Re: What kind of metal are the 803t sleds made out

yeah, I'd say it's a magnesium alloy...

seems about right for how brittle it is and how quickly it oxidizes in air... not to mention, you know, the flammability of it. :p

but yeah, that's awesome! I think I'm going to dremel one of mine down to dust and use it in a flash powder...

was it just the heatsink around the diode you burned, or the whole sled? I seem to recall the sleds themselves are the same kind of metal.

It was the entire sled.

heh... I certainly hope you got the diode out first :p

holy crap... that thing gets BRIGHT... it's like magnesium but burns a bit slower but just as bright.

;D The diode is nestled safely in a static proof baggy waiting for its kenom groove. ;)

It sounds like magnalium. Magnalium is very brittle plus is somewhat flammable.

BRB, I'm going to go light one of my sleds on fire.

Re: What kind of metal are the 803t sleds made out

Oh yeah, that is DEFINITELY a magnesium alloy. My guess is still with magnalium because it doesn't burn as violent as magnesium does, but by the way I was getting that thing to throw white sparks I know there is quite a lot of Mg in these things.

Discoveries like this are why you should never throw away anything. ;D

Now for the list of things the PHR-803T can do:
Make sweet violet lasers
Start campfires
Make fireworks
Make cool laser displays with the optics
and the most boring one...read HD-DVDs.

Now, if only there were a way to overdrive the 803t's enough to set their own sleds on fire... Hmmm...

LOL awesome! I'll have to try this.

Definitely not pure magnesium though.. IIRC, magnesium explodes violently when in contact with water, even without an ignition source...

EDIT: I recalled Wrong. lol. see below. Still pretty damn cool though! ;D

lol, next time I harvest the diode from one of these sleds I think it's gonna have an encounter with mr. mapp gas torch ;D

You're thinking of sodium or potassium... Magnesium has no such reaction with water. Volkswagen hubcaps and sony laptops are pure magnesium... It would suck to drive through a puddle and have your car explode.
