So you think the metal will fluoresce? :-/

Btw, there were some threads about these marbles quite some time ago...

you may have to wait a while for unitednuclear, though, as they just moved their location to Minnesota, and still haven't unpacked everything yet...
that said, I have bought from them in the past, and they do offer quality stuff. Never bough any uranium though.

Shameless-plug ;D
If you only want a couple of marbles for your "laser-kit", instead of a whole bag-full, I make and sell "vials" which each contain (2x)-5/8" diameter Uranium-marbles, along with GITD-end-caps which will produce a nice after-glow too.
http://mysite.verizon.net/grall/darkhorsecustom/id47.html

Stonetek sells them too, in both crackled and clear:
http://stonetek.org/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=78

I have been including bonus-"loose" uranium-marbles in some of my shipments for some-time, see the begining of this thread:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1217829875 ;) .
They are really a lot of fun.
Obligitory warning!!- Do be sure to watch for stray reflections, the beam will bounce everywhere, especially from the crackled-version.

What about pure uranium metal?!
-Mark

I recently purchased a 1oz. piece of U-238!  Expensive, but I couldn't pass that up!  I'll be getting it soon.[/quote]

Oh, that is SO awesome! Please keep us posted on this, I'm really excited to hear how it goes! Maybe if it's cool enough, I'll buy some of my own.

Hi all,

I just bought the last 3 lots on ebay. I am willing to sell in pieces once I get them. Let me know :)

I'm sure a refracting substance, like glass, or various crystals of uranium compounds, would fluoresce better than the pure metal. I don't even know if pure uranium DOES fluoresce. But when I get it I'll post some pics or something. It is somewhat reactive to oxygen, so I won't want to keep it out of its package for too long. Maybe I'll spray it with some kind of laquer.

Got my marbles in today.  They're not quite what I was expecting (they're not cracked), but still cool nonetheless.  All marbles have a BR  shining through them (~30mW I'm guessing), and the last one also has a 50mW green...but I bet you can't tell.

I ordered a set from someone else today which are cracked, but the guy says he won't ship until Friday!!!

Is this safe to play with. Radioactive materials are not very healthy as far as i know.

ahh, the radium girls. Truly a sad story of corporate cover-ups. Well worth the time reading, for anyone interested in such things. Also note that the marbles contain probably at most 2% uranium; that's what gives it its distinctive color.
Also called Vaseline glass...I like the cake platters available on eBay :-D

Yes. Natural uranium had very low radioactivity. You will NOT get radiation poisoning from uranium marbles. You also won't from a solid piece of U-238 like the one I'm getting. The half-life is 4.5 billion years - very low - and the particles emitted is non-penetrating.

Now, eating a soluable uranium compound, like uranyl nitrate, would be very, very bad, but not so much because of its radioactivity, but because it's a poisonous metal, like mercury or lead. But if you did ingest it like that, the radioactivity certainly wouldn't do you good, because the radiation, low and non-penetrating as it is, would still be in extremely close proximity to living cells.

And like the other poster said, I got it because it was there. ;D
