Trying to measure the power of my 405nm

I bought a set (5) of chinese 405nm "200mw" laserpointers. Of course they are not 200, i guess they are around 50-75mw maximum.

I would like to determine the approximated power of the pointers via the burning cigarrete test. Do you know how many 405nm miliwats are necessary for a cigar to get some smoke asuming that they have acrylic lenses and that are in focus?.

I hope with five I´ll get it burn. Bets accepted (;

Simple answer......... Test them on a Laser Power Meter.

What you want to do with a cigar is akin to sticking a wet
finger out a car's window to get an accurate speed reading.:eek:

Dear Jerry, Im not looking for accurate measurament, is more a question of curiosity and experimentation will.

I´ll buy one meter when my budget permit it, count on it.

Just an observation, I looked at your video and it states you are using
Red (650nm, 200mw) , Green (532nm, 100mw) and Violet (405nm, 200mw
and you are shining this on a wall with kid playing in the lights.
If the beams are coming out at these powers that is BAD!!!!

I'm with Jerry here you can't get a good guess at power without a meter, by comparison to black plastic burning I'd guess you'd be able to come within a few hundred mW's.

Also do post a pic of you trying to burn with 5 pen lasers :crackup: safety first though :beer:

I can smoke the wood on clothes pegs with as little as 30mW
of focused 405nm.
I can also do it with 120mW of focused 405nm on the same
surface.

It takes a calibrated Laser Power Meter to know at what power
YOUR Lasers will burn the SAME material.

There are many DIY LPMs on the Forum you can build. You don't
need to buy one from Coherent or OPHIR...

There are so many options for one to make an LPM. I have been torn so many ways for making my own or just outright buying one. After agonizing on it for about 2 months I have settled on just going all the way and getting a Laserbee II. I decided on this route after also deciding that I want to sell lasers in quantities which requires a reliable and accurate LPM. If you aren't planning on selling lasers then DIY LPMs are definitely a sound option.
