Supposed to be an 8x? What do you think?

Hi All,

I was sent an 8x, (well 320mW pulsed from the spreadsheet which means the same!), diode to test and would appreciate your seasoned eyes being cast over the results.

First of all, the threshold seems a little high to me and I've not seen any on graphs reaching Vf of 6.5V!

The outputs seem to be in the right ballpark but not knowing just how to plot an appropriate graph on Excel, I can't really compare. (Any tips on this gratefully received!)

Anyway, here are the results.

Lasing threshold 4.15V @ 39mA, 5mW

V--------mA-------mW
4.35------50-------19
4.72------75-------51
5.0------100-------79
5.25-----125------112
5.45-----150------142
5.62-----175------175
5.78-----200------205
5.88-----225------235
6.0------250------265
6.08-----275------295
6.18-----300------324
6.23-----325------352
6.27-----350------377
6.33-----375------405
6.39-----400------432
6.44-----425------458
6.49-----450------481

It winked out as a Class IV leaving a peak reading of 503mW but I don't know what the other readings were for sure.

I simply ramped up this table without waiting for cooling at each reading. I stopped a couple of times but once warmed the numbers returned to the same as before switch off.

These readings were taken with a full threaded Aixiz 3 element lens so if comparing to any 405-G-1 readings there should be around a 15% higher reading than mine.

At first glance these seem to be the right outputs for an 8x but not terribly efficient. Am I correct?

This is just one diode so there may be others with better specs but for a bare diode, (not extracted, it looks like it's never been in a sled!), it is interesting to see. Long pins and no detectable adhesive, just pretinning at the very tips of the pin. The part numbers and data sheet I've been shown describe a BDR-203 diode but maybe they never met the desired spec to be installed. What do you think? These may be a cheap 8x source.

Thanks for the reading...

M

It looks like a lower efficiency 8X. The 8X and the 12X both pulled above 6V at higher outputs. This was the impetus behind the development of the MicroBoost driver

If you used a 405-G1, you should be seeing ~500mw creep up right around ~360-380mA.

Thanks for reading, I thought as much but never having had one to just punish I'd never sat down and done the test.

What do you think to the likelyhood these were not up to scratch to go into sleds or simply surplus? These are going to come in at, "very reasonable".

@ Meatball - I only get to 496mW @ 400mA by adding 15%? I suppose that's still not to be sniffed at though.

^Brilliant, thanks Gonin! I couldn't figure out how to put the mA and mW as an axis. That does look pretty linear doesn't it! Shallow tale off around the 300-350mA but my eyes might be decieving me. At least there's no wild spiking.

Many thanks,

are you going to be able to get moar Morgan? if so what would expected pricing be. i am yet to have a powerful blu-ray. I killed my 8x during assembly. =(

^ Yes, there will be MOAR! of these. Somewhere around the $50 delivered I think but it depends on available stocks. I'll know more soon though as I know an order is being processed.

If it's of any interest to you there is a 12x GB here -

This is hopefully going to move pretty fast but it's probably your cheapest way to a high power BR at the moment.

Keep an eye out for updates on the 8x too.

What? 12x for $60?

*sob* *sob* I'm f$cking broke *sob*

*sob* You...h-h-had to do it n-n-now...*sob*

Seriously, though, best wishes with the GB and hope it all runs as smoothly as a $20 hooker on a tube of KY jelly (sorry for the terrible analogy, ha ha).

Oh, boy, do I ever stop?

Most of us never thought that we'd be able to get 12Xs' for under $100. Well, that day is here, and make the most of it.

I'm sorry Gonin, but the people have spoken! :D

I'm sure if this one goes well, there will be another. If not there's always a cheaper 8x coming at some point too.

Don't be sad!
